London, Jul 8 (CNA) -- The main aim for all sides at this moment should be
to create the best possible atmosphere for the talks of Geneva to succeed
with everything else being of secondary importance.
That's how the Foreign Office spokeswoman reacted last night to CNA's
question for a comment on the situation in Strovilia.

by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Jul 8 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government today made
it abundantly clear that the UN "have not conveyed a proposal by the
Turkish side to President Glafcos Clerides" during the UN-led proximity
talks that opened in Geneva on July 5.
In a written statement after media reports to this effect, Government
Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou says the negotiations with UN Secretary-
General's Special Adviser, Alvaro de Soto "are taken up on the discussion
of the four core issues of the Cyprus question as set out by the UN
Secretary General".

[03] Union of Cyprus Journalists - "Avrupa" - Arrests
Nicosia, Jul 8 (CNA) - The Union of Cyprus Journalists has appealed to the
Acting Special Representative of the UN SG in Cyprus, the ambassadors of
the permanent members of the Security Council and media organisations to
act urgently for the protection of Turkish Cypriot journalists, arrested
yesterday by the Turkish occupation regime.
In an appeal to the representative on Freedom of the Media of the
Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the International and
the European Federation of Journalists, the Journalists' organisations of
Turkey and the International Press Institute and other media and
journalists' organisations, the UCJ reported the arrest and disappearance
last night of Editor-in-Chief of Turkish Cypriot daily "Avrupa", Sener
Levent and two or more of his colleagues.
