    [03] House President - Romanian Parliamentarians

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- Issues which concern cooperation between the Parliaments of Cyprus and Romania as well as common security policy and cooperation matters were examined during a meeting between House President Spyros Kyprianou and the President and members of the Committee for European Integration of the Romanian Parliament.

    Chairperson of the Committee, Mariana Stoica told reporters that they "discussed very interesting issues about Cyprus and common security and cooperation policy and also tried to find some good things about parliamentarian cooperation" because both countries aspire to become members of the European Union.

    [04] Spokesman - UN - Talks

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou clarified today that at this moment there is no issue of changing the venue for the third round of UN-sponsored Cyprus peace talks, scheduled for New York, and that what is pending is the time of the talks.

    He recommended a few days' patience until doctors, treating Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, who had an operation last Friday to remove a polyp from his large intestine, are in a position to say when the President will be able to travel. The spokesman dismissed suggestions about a possible replacement of the President at the talks.

    [05] Greek Cypriot - Turkish Cypriot parties - Meeting

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) - Issues which concern contacts between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities were discussed today during a meeting of political party leaders or representatives by both sides, in the UN-controlled buffer zone.

    The next meeting of the parties, which convened at the initiative of the Slovak Embassy, has been set for June 6 to discuss "practical measures of rapprochement", a joint communique, issued at the end of the meeting said.

    [06] Miss Universe Pageant

    by Demetra Molyva Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- A dazzling Millennium Presentation show on Sunday night gave spectators a first glimpse of the spectacular Miss Universe Pageant, which will be staged on Saturday at Eleftheria stadium in Nicosia.

    The show extravaganza was staged at Eleftheria, leading up to the final telecast of the Miss Universe 2000 pageant, the 49th in the organisation's history, which will be aired live by America's number one television network CBS to more than 1,5 billion viewers in North and Latin America.

    [07] Defence Minister - Solana - Meeting postponed

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- A meeting between Cyprus' Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos and Secretary-General of the Council of the EU, High Representative for Common, Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, has been postponed.

    Hasikos was scheduled to leave Cyprus Tuesday for his meeting with Solana, who is also General Secretary of the Western European Union.

    [08] US President - Cyprus President - Health

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- US President Bill Clinton expressed best wishes for a speedy recovery to President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides, who is recovering from surgery to remove a polyp from his large intestine.

    In his letter to the President, Clinton notes that he was "sorry to learn of your need to undergo surgery on May 5" and expressed "best wishes for a speedy recovery", hoping that President Clerides will soon resume his "vigorous and effective leadership".

    [09] Communications Minister - Shipping

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- Communications and Works Minister Averof Neofytou stressed today that the present situation of above average detention rates of Cyprus ships and their inclusion in priority lists, cannot be tolerated any longer.

    He further emphasised that "safety standards of our fleet have to be raised and substandard ships have to be eliminated".

    [10] President - Health - Medical report

    Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- Doctors treating President Glafcos Clerides after Friday's operation to remove a polyp from his large intestine said here tonight his condition is "exceedingly good", he had physiotherapy today and walked in the corridor of the clinic.

    They also said medical tests on the polyp showed in places the existence of cancerous cells but added the President is not likely to need any further treatment and the prognosis is "excellent."
