    [01] URGENT: Cyprus' EU Chief Negotiator - Surgery - London

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus' EU Chief Negotiator and President of the United Democrats, George Vassiliou, leaves urgently for London this afternoon where on Wednesday he will undergo surgery to remove a benign tumour in his brain.

    The relevant announcement was made here Tuesday by Health Minister Frixos Savvides.

    [02] Cyprus President - Resumes duties

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides resumed his duties today as he continues to recuperate from an operation last week to remove a polyp from his large intestine.

    The President was visited here Tuesday morning by Attorney-General Alecos Markides, the ministers of Health and Education, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou and other aides.

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Former President of the Republic, President of the United Democrats and head of Cyprus' European Union Negotiating Team, George Vassiliou, leaves urgently for London this afternoon where tomorrow he will undergo surgery to remove a benign tumour in the brain.

    Health Minister Frixos Savvides said the benign tumour or meningioma is situated in the cerebral hemisphere and will be operated on Wednesday at a London neurosurgical centre.

    [04] President Clerides - Russian Ambassador

    Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Vladimir Pavlinov called today on President Glafcos Clerides, recovering from surgery to remove a polyp from his large intestine, to convey to him the best wishes of Russian President Vladimir Putin for a speedy recovery.

    In a short statement on his way out from Evangelistria Clinic, Pavlinov praised President Clerides for his contribution to the enhanced development of friendly relations between the two countries, and announced the appointment of Vladimir Prygin as Russia's envoy for Cyprus. CNA/MK/MCH/MM/2000
