    [02] UNFICYP - Resolution - Cyprus

    by Maria Myles

New York, Dec 7 (CNA) -- A draft resolution on Cyprus, consisting of eight paragraphs and expected to be adopted by the UN Security Council, includes the bare minimum of provisions necessary for the renewal of the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mandate and the renewal and support of the UN Secretary-General's good offices mission on Cyprus.

The initiative behind the moves to adopt the draft resolution belongs to Britain and in particular to British envoy for Cyprus Sir David Hannay whose country is the current chairman of the Security Council for the month of December.

London, Dec 7 (CNA) -- Close economic relations between Cyprus and Britain were highlighted by President Glafcos Clerides and his Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis, at a seminar organised yesterday by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry under the title "Cyprus: Business and investment opportunities".

In his address, read by Finance Minister Takis Klerides, the President noted that "once Cyprus enters the European Union it will become the Community's eastern frontier and a window of opportunity for the Middle East market and the markets of Eastern Europe".
