    [01] British citizen - Two-year imprisonment - Attack

    Larnaca, Dec 6 (CNA) -- The Assize Court sentenced today a British citizen to two years imprisonment for causing grievous bodily harm to a 28-year old Cypriot man after attacking him last August.

    Gavin Gallimore, 30, from Essex, admitted attacking Loukas Ioannou from the Nicosia village of Peristerona on August 3 at a disco in the south- eastern coastal holiday resort of Ayia Napa.

    New York, Dec 6 (CNA) -- Proximity talks aiming to prepare the ground for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem resumed today at the UN headquarters after a weekend break with the second meeting between UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

    President Clerides did not make any statements to the press on his arrival at the UN.

    [03] Cyprus Airways - Y2K - Flight simulation

    Nicosia, Dec 6 (CNA) -- The island's national carrier, Cyprus Airways, successfully completed a simulation of a flight in Y2K conditions, showing that it is completely compliant and ready both in air and on the ground to handle Y2K.

    An airline statement said here Monday that an Airbus A-320 without passengers carried out a flight test on Monday morning with its clocks and computer systems forwarded where the millennium switchover took place 30 minutes into the flight.

    New York, Dec 6 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan had a second meeting here today with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides within the framework of the proximity talks aimed to prepare the ground for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem.

    President Clerides did not make any statements after the meeting, which took place at the UN headquarters.

    Annan is scheduled to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash later this afternoon.

    New York, Dec 6 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash said here today he will make a "little complaint" to the UN Secretary-General for a statement made by the President of Greece that "Cyprus is Greek".

    However, this will not affect the UN-led proximity talks on Cyprus, said Denktash while entering the UN headquarters for a meeting with Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who earlier had a meeting with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

    [06] Cyprus - UN - Turkey - Violations

    New York, Dec 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus has protested to the United Nations against violations of Cyprus' air space by Turkish warplanes on the eve of the start of the UN-led proximity talks aimed to end the island's division.

    In a letter to the UN Secretary-General circulated today as a UN document, Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN Sotos Zakheos informed the UN chief of new violations of the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR) and Cyprus' national air space by Turkish military aircraft between November 11 - 27, 1999.

    [07] UN SG Spokesman - Cyprus talks

    New York, Dec 6 (CNA) -- The UN-led proximity talks on Cyprus will go on until the two parties involved either feel they can no longer make progress or they have a breakthrough to announce.

    In his daily press briefing Fred Eckhard, Spokesman of the Secretary- General said the meetings will continue on a daily basis, adding that there is a tentative schedule for ten days which will be extended if necessary.

    [08] Defence Minister - Returns from Moscow trip

    Larnaca, Dec 6 (CNA) -- Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos today expressed his full satisfaction on the outcome of his four-day official visit to Moscow where he held talks with his Russian counterpart Igor Sergeyev.

    In statements at Larnaca International Airport on his return from Moscow Hasikos said he and Sergeyev discussed "the Cyprus question, defence policy issues and international developments concerning defence issues".

    New York, Dec 6 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said that during the UN-led proximity talks an effort is underway to make the ground for progress and that he has raised more issues than the four which make up the fundamental aspects of the Cyprus problem.

    Speaking after a one-hour meeting with Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Denktash said he also "complained" about a statement which, according to the Turkish Cypriot leader, the President of Greece made that "Cyprus is Greek".
