    [01] Cyprus - European Stock Exchanges Federation

    Nicosia, Dec 3 (CNA) -- Interior Minister, Acting Finance Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou has said the Federation of European Stock Exchanges (FESE) is "positively considering" a Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) application to become an associate member.

    On his part FESE Deputy Secretary General Gregor Pozniac, who is heading a three-member delegation here to assess Cyprus' application, said after meeting Christodoulou today that the CSE should look into the future.

    [02] Israeli Ambassador - Peres Centre for Peace - Conference

    Nicosia, Dec 3 (CNA) -- Young people from Jordan, Egypt, the Palestinian Authority and Israel have reaffirmed their determination to work for a new and peaceful Middle East, giving the message that where there is a will there is a way, Israeli Ambassador to Cyprus Shemi Tzur said today.

    Speaking to CNA on the Fourth Young Leaders network Conference held in Paphos from December 2-6, Tzur said he felt more optimistic about the region after listening to the young people attending the Conference.

    [03] Cyprus - Russia - Defence Ministers

    Nicosia, Dec 3 (CNA) -- Defence Ministers of Cyprus and Russia, Socrates Hasikos and Igor Sergeyev, today discussed military and technical cooperation between the two countries at a meeting in Moscow and are scheduled to sign a protocol supplementing a cooperation agreement signed in 1996 this afternoon.

    Sergeyev told the press that the talks were held in a constructive atmosphere while Hasikos reiterated that Cyprus "attaches much importance to relations with Russia".

    [04] Greek Cypriot - Turkish forces - Released

    Nicosia, Dec 3 (CNA) -- The Turkish occupation authorities released today a Greek Cypriot who was illegally apprehended last Tuesday by Turkish troops.

    Argyris Roussou, 65, from Aglantzia suburb of Nicosia was abducted by the Turkish forces when he drove into the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus from the village of Lympia, south east of the capital Nicosia.

    [05] UN - Cyprus - Proximity talks start (1)

    New York, Dec 3 (CNA) -- Proximity talks aiming to prepare the ground for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem began at the UN headquarters this afternoon with a meeting between UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.

    President Clerides did not make any statements to the press on his arrival at the UN for the meeting, expected to last an hour.

    Annan has spoken to reporters before the meeting got underway.

    [06] UN chief - Statements - Cyprus question

    New York, Dec 3 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said there should be no unrealistic expectations from the proximity talks on the Cyprus question he opened in New York today, but said the aim is to try moving the process forward.

    Replying to questions before starting the talks with a meeting with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, Annan expressed the hope serious discussions will take place on substantial issues, in search of a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus.

    New York, Dec 3 (CNA) -- The first meeting between UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan and Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides within the framework of proximity talks aiming to prepare the ground for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem ended at the UN headquarters this afternoon.

    Asked how the one-hour meeting went, Clerides replied, "you can see, we are smiling".

    [08] Russian Defence Minister - Cooperation with Cyprus

    Nicosia, Dec 3 (CNA) -- The Russian Defence Ministry regards Cyprus as "a dependable and promising partner in the field of military and military- technological cooperation", its head Igor Sergeyev has said today in Moscow.

    According to the Russian news agency Itar-Tass, speaking to the press before signing a cooperation agreement with his Cypriot counterpart Socrates Hasikos, the Russian minister suggested the implementation of all bilateral measures agreed, starting from 2001 on an annual basis.

    [09] Stock Exchange - New settlement system

    Nicosia, Dec 3 (CNA) -- The new settlement system of the Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) to be in effect as from December 9 will render it more efficient and flexible to deal with future problems.

    This was stated today in a press conference by CSE Chairman Dinos Papadopoulos who pointed out that the new system will not eliminate all problems facing the Stock Exchange and "does not constitute the final solution".

    [10] UN SG Spokesman - Proximity talks

    New York, Dec 3 (CNA) -- The UN Secretary-General's special advisor for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto is most likely to conduct the proximity talks on Cyprus on Monday, at the organisation's headquarters, according to the UN chief's spokesman.

    Fred Eckhard also told his daily briefing today that the American President's special emissary for Cyprus Alfred Moses did not hand Annan a letter from Bill Clinton for technical reasons, but expressed the US government's full support to the talks at a meeting they had yesterday.

    New York, Dec 3 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash described as "useful" his meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the first within the framework of the UN-led proximity talks which opened this afternoon at the UN headquarters.

    Asked by CNA's correspondent after his one-hour meeting with Annan whether they discussed the core issues, Denktash replied, "we had a very good and useful meeting".

    New York, Dec 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides outlined the Greek Cypriot side's positions on the four fundamental aspects of the Cyprus problem during his meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the first in the UN-led proximity talks which got underway today.

    CNA sources in New York said that the President outlined his positions on the main issues that the UN chief had asked the two leaders to prepare for.

    [13] UN - Annan - Cyprus

    New York, Dec 3 (CNA) -- As the first day of the UN-led proximity talks on Cyprus ended, UN Chief Kofi Annan said as long as they are talking, progress is made.

    At the same time, his spokesman Fred Eckhard announced that the Security Council will hold consultations on Cyprus on Tuesday and that on Wednesday it will have a formal meeting on the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
