[01] Rauf Denktash - Press conference

    by Maria Myles

New York, Dec 3 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said he expects this round of proximity talks on Cyprus to "pave the ground successfully for face-to-face talks" and failing that he would like these to prepare the ground for an adjourned session to continue the search in paving the ground.

Denktash, reiterating his long standing positions of many aspects of the Cyprus question, told a press conference here yesterday he would try to explain why confederation can work in Cyprus and according to him "does no injustice to the Greek Cypriots".

[03] British Foreign Secretary - Cyprus - Turkey - EU

Nicosia, Dec 3 (CNA) -- British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook reaffirmed his government's position that a solution to the Cyprus problem should not be a precondition for the island's accession to the European Union and pointed out that no third country has a veto on the accession of any candidate.

Replying to questions during a debate in the House of Commons, Cook also said that at the Helsinki EU Summit next week Britain will work "for a declaration that recognises the status of Turkey as a candidate for EU membership".

    [04] Cypriot Minister - WTO

Nicosia, Dec 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis has told the 3rd Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organisation in Seattle that Cyprus has demonstrated the benefits, the challenges, and the hazards of advancing trade liberalisation.

"Our liberal trade regime, underpined by harmonisation with the acquis communautaire and our policy of moving closer to the single European Market, has optimised in certain areas the benefits and has created new opportunities and welfare gains. Problems created in other areas remain under close scrutiny," Rolandis said.
