[01] Cyprus problem - Christian Democrats International

Nicosia, Nov 29 (CNA) -- The Christian Democrats International (CDI) believes the proximity talks on Cyprus should be substantive and aim at a settlement based on UN Security Council resolutions providing for a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

In a resolution adopted during its meeting in Bucharest that ended Sunday, the CDI underlines that Cyprus' accession to the European Union will benefit both communities on the island and urges the Turkish Cypriots to participate in the official team negotiating accession.

[03] Cyprus - Solidarity with Palestinians

Nicosia, Nov 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides today reaffirmed his government's support to efforts for "establishing peace, security, stability and economic prosperity throughout the region of the Middle East as a whole" and pledges that Cyprus will help in any way it can.

In a message on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the President says the signing of the Sharm-al- Sheihk Memorandum in September 1999 "demonstrates that the Palestinians are genuinely dedicated to a peaceful solution and their devotion to it has not dissipated".

Nicosia, Nov 29 (CNA) -- The National Council (top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus problem) met today ahead of the resumption of UN- led bicommunal talks due to start in New York on December 3.

Speaking after the four-hour long meeting, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said the parties "retain the positions they had already publicly expressed" but refrained from answering any questions.
