    [01] Spokesman - Cyprus problem

Nicosia, Nov 23 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government expects that the Turkish Cypriot leader will go to UN-sponsored talks "in a fresh spirit" having already decided it is time to settle the Cyprus problem on the basis of a federation.

The government believes remarks by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan that one should not have unrealistic expectations from next month's talks display "seriousness and realism."

    [02] Spokesman - EU - Cyprus - Turkey

Nicosia, Nov 23 (CNA) -- The start of UN-led proximity talks is not considered by either Cyprus or Greece as sufficient justification to warrant a decision by the European Union to anoint Turkey to the status of a candidate country, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

He also said that at the EU Helsinki summit other signs and moves must be given to satisfy the Greek side before Turkey becomes an EU candidate state.

    [03] Greece - Cyprus question - EU

Athens, Nov 23 (CNA) -- Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou today outlined developments which could affect efforts to settle the Cyprus question, but said a solution depends on the political will of the Turkish side.

His words were echoed by Greek Government Spokesman Demitris Reppas who also said that Athens has not yet decided if it will give the green light to Turkey's upgrading as a candidate country in the upcoming European Union summit.

    [04] Britain - US - Cyprus

London, Nov 23 (CNA) -- British Foreign Office spokesman expressed today hope that the visits and various meetings held in Greece and Turkey by US President Bill Clinton will strengthen relations between the two countries.

The spokesman noted the strengthening of relations between Greece and Turkey "will help in creating the preconditions for a successful conclusion of the new effort for solving the Cyprus question."
