    [01] WEU Council of Ministers - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Nov 24 (CNA) -- The Western European Union (WEU) has expressed appreciation for its ongoing dialogue with Cyprus.

    The reference to Cyprus is made in the declaration of the WEU Council of Ministers which met in Luxembourg between November 22-23, and prompted a reaction by Turkey which asked to dissociate itself from it.

    [02] President Clerides - US ambassador

    Nicosia, Nov 24 (CNA) -- US ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler today called on President Glafcos Clerides with whom he discussed issues relating to the proximity talks on the Cyprus issue scheduled to begin in New York on December 3.

    The US ambassador refrained from making statements to the press after the meeting, but sources say the American side is satisfied with the results of President Bill Clinton's visits to Greece and Turkey last week.

    [03] US Senator - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Nov 24 (CNA) -- US Senator Joseph Bidden warned that there will be a political loss for Turkey if it is granted a candidate status for entry to the European Union (EU) and then it fails.

    Speaking at a gathering of overseas Greeks and Cypriots organised by the Cyprus Federation of America and the International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus at Astoria, New York, Bidden said there is a some hope now for Cyprus with the Helsinki European Council because it is a place where there is "some leverage" on Turkey's EU course.

    [04] Cyprus - Belgium - Tax agreement

    Nicosia, Nov 24 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Belgium have exchanged the ratification documents of an agreement to avoid double taxation, the prevention of tax evasion in relation to income and capital tax, which comes into force December 8.

    According to an official press release issued here today, the documents were exchanged in Brussels yesterday.

    [05] Papandreou - Cyprus visit - Anastasiades

    Nicosia, Nov 24 (CNA) -- Greece's Foreign Minister George Papandreou said Greece and Cyprus have identity of views and common positions on national issues, expressing the conviction that this will be emphasised during his visit to Cyprus which begins tomorrow.

    Speaking after meeting Nicos Anastasiades, leader of the island's ruling rightwing Democratic Rally party, in Athens today, Papandreou said they had a useful discussion where they confirmed "identity of views on national issues" between Greece and Cyprus" in view of the Helsinki European Council on December 10-11, the Athens News Agency reported.

    [06] Cyprus ambassador - Belgium - Award

    Nicosia, Nov 24 (CNA) -- The Community Association of European Order of Merit has presented Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the European Union Nicos Agathocleous with its highest awards for his contribution to the European ideal.

    An official announcement issued here today says the ambassador was given the award at a ceremony, held on November 17, in which 13 European personalties and former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger were honoured.
