[02] Cyprus - Greece - Joint communique
by Maria Chyrsanthou
Athens, Nov 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Greece believe the upcoming talks
on the Cyprus issue should be substantive, with UN resolutions and a call
by the Group of Eight most industrialised countries (G8) as their basis.
In a communique, issued after talks in Athens today between President
Glafcos Clerides and Greek Premier Costas Simitis, the two leaders welcome
a statement by American President Bill Clinton that the status quo in
Cyprus is unacceptable.

[03] President Clerides - Return - Statements
Nicosia, Nov 22 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides said next month's peace
talks will be on the substance of the Cyprus issue, taking into account UN
resolutions, and stressed that the UN and the US have given assurances to
that effect, noting that a second round of talks is already on the cards,
irrespective of the outcome of the first phase of December's UN-led talks.
He also said that the duration of the talks may not allow discussions
to cover all the key aspects of the Cyprus question and enable the parties
to make progress on all of them, adding that his attending the European
Union summit would depend on the course of the New York talks.
