    [01] Cyprus - Italy - Cultural ties

    Nicosia, Nov 5 (CNA) -- Cyprus-Italian cultural events will be organised by the Municipality of Nicosia from 15 to 20 November.

    At a press conference today Nicosia Mayor Lellos Demetriades said the cultural events, which include performances of a theatrical play by Luigi Pirandello and an art exhibition by Giovan Battista Piranesi, are organised as part of a programme of cooperation between Cyprus and European countries.

    [02] President Clerides - Canadian High Commissioner

    Nicosia, Nov 5 (CNA) -- Canadian High Commissioner Alexandra Bugailiskis has backed UN efforts to resume bicommunal peace talks as the only way forward to settle the Cyprus question.

    She also said her country's tender to build a nuclear reactor in southern Turkey is one of the safest in the world, even under very difficult conditions, including an earthquake.

    Nicosia, Nov 5 (CNA) -- Cyprus holds the 16th place worldwide regarding per capita income Minister of Finance Takis Klerides said today, addressing a meeting of the Joint Committee of Finance and Public Service of the Irish Parliament.

    Klerides, currently visiting Dublin, briefed the Irish Parliamentarians on the main characteristics of Cyprus' economy, its dynamism and flexibility and noted that the economic achievements of Cyprus are acknowledged by various international organisations such as the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund.

    [04] Turkey - Nuclear reactor

    Nicosia, Nov 5 (CNA) -- A nuclear accident in Akkuyu (Turkey) would make the Chernobyl accident seem trivial, Canadian member of Parliament Jim Karygiannis and Research Director of the Canadian environmentalist group Nuclear Awareness Project, David Martin stressed here today.

    Pointing to the disastrous effects the building of the proposed Akkuyu nuclear plant would have in the Eastern Mediterranean, the first of its kind in the region, they called upon the Cyprus government and Parliament to protest this project to their Canadian counterparts.

    [05] Kasoulides - Solana - Cutileiro

    Brussels, Nov 5 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides met here today with Secretary General of the Council of the European Union and High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana and Western European Union Secretary General Jose Cutileiro, whom he briefed on recent developments in the Cyprus problem.

    Kasoulides briefed them on UN efforts for the resumption of talks between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides in Cyprus without preconditions, and pointed to the need of making the best use of the time between now and the EU Summit in Helsinki next month.
