    [01] Cyprus - Demographic report 1998

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- A demographic report for the year 1998 issued by the Department of Statistics and Research estimates the population in the government controlled areas of the Republic at 663.300 at the end of 1998 recording an increase of 0,8% over the previous year.

    According to the demographic report, it is estimated that 68,9% of the population resides in urban areas while in the rural areas lives 31,1% of the total population.

    [02] Spokesman - EU - Finland - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government considers that the result of last night's extraordinary summit of European leaders at Tampere, Finland, on Turkey gives Greece more chances to successfully secure the policies which would pave the way to a Cyprus settlement.

    Speaking to CNA, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said it is "evident from the statements of various European leaders after the Tampere meeting that the Cyprus problem is at the centre of the concerns of the European Union in regard with Turkey's possible candidature."

    [03] "Money Show '99" - Cyprus - Greece

    Nicosia, Oct 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus can demonstrate remarkable achievements in the field of economy due to the vigour of Cypriot business people, Greece's Ambassador to Cyprus Kyriakos Rodousakis said here Saturday.

    Addressing the two-day "Money Show '99" meeting which began today in the capital Rodousakis noted the excellent bilateral relations between Cyprus and Greece.

    [04] Human rights seminar - Council of Europe - Opens

    Limassol, Oct 16 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides stressed today that Cyprus and the drama of its people should not remain a sad exception in a Europe which is free of division.

    Opening the seminar "Fifty years of the Council of Europe - Achievements and Prospects in the field of Human Rights" held in Limassol, President Clerides said that "more determination and political will is yet needed so that the universal values and the principles of international law will prevail".

    The seminar, organised by the International Association for the Protection of Human Rights in Cyprus and the Directorate of Human Rights of the Council of Europe, was also attended by four Turkish Cypriots, including the President of the T/C Association for the Protection of Human Rights, Hayadi Yasamsal.

    Elizabeth Palm, Vice President of the European Court of human Rights is also participating at the one day meeting.

    [05] AKEL - Patriotic Unity Movement - Meeting - Declaration

    Larnaca, Oct 16 (CNA) -- A solution to the Cyprus problem must be achieved as soon as possible, General Secretary of the Turkish Cypriot Patriotic Unity Movement Rasih Keskiner stressed today after a meeting with General Secretary of left wing party AKEL Demetris Christofias.

    Speaking after the meeting which took place at Pila village, north- east of the coastal town of Larnaca where Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots live together, Keskiner said that "as time passes the partition of the island is being consolidated" adding that "time is running out for Cyprus".
