    [01] Spokesman - Cyprus question - Turkey - EU

Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has said it is up to the UN chief to decide on the format of the talks to settle the Cyprus question, but underlined that they must aim at a comprehensive settlement and not give the Turkish side the opportunity to play with time.

Replying to questions during a visit to the CNA today, the Spokesman said that the possible upgrading of Turkey's status to a candidate country for EU membership is an issue under discussion until Helsinki's December summit.

    [02] Vasiliou - Markides - Eurochambers

Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus' chief Negotiator at the accession talks with the European Union (EU), George Vasiliou said today that Cyprus does not expect to be victimised and not join the EU, if a solution to the Cyprus problem is not found, by the time that the entry negotiations are concluded.

Speaking at the seventh Annual Congress of Eurochambers in Nicosia, Vasiliou said that "if for reasons which would be completely outside our control... a solution to the Cyprus problem cannot be found, we do not expect to be victimised for another time. We do not expect Cyprus not to join the EU."

    [04] Britain - Cyprus - Turkey - EU

London, Oct 15 (CNA) -- Britain supports the acceptance of Turkey's candidacy for accession to the European Union (EU) without any preconditions, sources at the Prime Minister's office have stated.

At a briefing session with foreign journalists on the EU summit at Tampere, Finland which opened today, the same sources added that Cyprus is a separate issue, meaning, by implication, that this should not come up at the discussion of Turkey's candidacy at the European Council in Helsinki.

    [05] Spokesman - Britain - Travel Advice

Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- The government is making representations to Britain about a travel advice London has issued on Cyprus warning travellers of risk in the energy, water and health sectors at the turn of the century.

The government considers this move as "unacceptable" and a kind of political pressure on the Greek Cypriot side, taking into account the fact that economic stability is a vital component of Cyprus' efforts to settle the political problem on the island.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office told CNA today the travel advice on Cyprus and many other countries (over 100) is aimed at warning travellers of the possible risks as nobody really knows how things may develop at the turn of the century.

    [07] Spokesman - EU - Report - Cyprus

Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government considers the European Commission's progress report on Cyprus as positive and encouraging, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou stressed in a written statement issued today.

He said the "fact that the report notes that Cyprus is ahead of other candidate member states in the accession negotiations and that the pending issues can easily be overcome, proves that the target of Cyprus joining the EU in the next wave of enlargement is absolutely realistic and feasible."
