    Washington, Sep 11 (CNA) -- US President Bill Clinton described as a positive step the involvement of the Group of Eight (G8) on Cyprus.

    In his bimonthly report to the Congress, Clinton also said Defence Secretary William Cohen's visit to Greece and Turkey also emphasised the US commitment to reaching a Cyprus settlement.

    Paphos, Sep 11 (CNA) -- The Pafos Aphrodite Festival opened on Friday night with the staging of Guiseppe Verdi's AIDA by the Bolshoi Opera Theatre.

    Under a clear sky and against the background of the Paphos harbour, on the island's western coast, a packed audience was awed by the spectacular staging and performance of Verdi's AIDA, which receives eternal admiration.

    [03] National Council - Spokesman - Foreign Minister - Parties

    Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) -- The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, was briefed today by President Glafcos Clerides on the latest Cyprus developments, in view of his departure to Athens and New York on Monday.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said a decision on whether to allow political parties which are not represented at the House of Representatives to participate in the National Council meetings will be taken after the House parties take a final position on the issue.
