[01] UN chief - Turkish Cypriot leader
New York, Sep 10 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash remained
firm in his intransigent positions during his meeting with UN Secretary-
General Kofi Annan yesterday in New York, ruling out the possibility of
direct talks without recognition of his illegal regime.
At the same time, a statement on the meeting between Annan and
Denktash said the Secretary-General hoped to take steps to energise the
process in the autumn since a settlement can only be found through
negotiations between the two sides.
