    [01] Spokesman - Athens Earthquake

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- The government has expressed the wish that recent cooperation and friendship among Greeks, Turks and Greek Cypriots in the wake of the devastating earthquakes would become a permanent fixture.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou confirmed that three Cypriots were killed in the Athens quake and a 16 year-old girl is still trapped under the ruins but there are no reports that the girl is alive.

    [02] Government Spokesman - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- The government believes there is an upgraded US interest in efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem, which is evident in meetings of American officials with high-ranking Turkish representatives, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    Papapetrou said a statement by American Ambassador to the UN Richard Holbrooke that the interlocutor of the US is Ankara and not the Turkish Cypriot community leader "basically adopts our long standing position that the decision-making centre is Ankara".

    [03] British High Commissioner - Cyprus - Turkey - EU

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- British High Commissioner to Cyprus Edward Clay said today there should be no direct linkage between negotiations for a Cyprus settlement and relations between the European Union and Turkey.

    Speaking after a courtesy call with Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou, Clay said that improved relations between Turkey, Greece and the EU would help UN efforts for a Cyprus settlement prosper.

    [04] Spokesman - Inter-state case

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- The government has expressed satisfaction about a report by the European Commission of Human Rights of the Council of Europe which has found Turkey responsible for gross human rights violations in Cyprus.

    "The report is a weapon in our political arsenal which will be used as we consider appropriate throughout our attempts for a political settlement in Cyprus," Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    [05] Vassiliou - Accession Partnership

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Chief negotiator in Cyprus' talks for accession to the European Union, George Vassiliou, said today the signing of the Accession Partnership agreement with the EU is of political and economic importance.

    Speaking after a meeting with the President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides ahead of his visit to Athens, London and New York, Vassiliou said they exchange views on this "important positive development" for Cyprus' process of accession.

    [06] House President - Poland

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Poland has reiterated its support for a just and peaceful settlement of the Cyprus question and said it could help towards this objective.

    Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski outlined these views at a meeting with the President of the Cyprus House of Representatives Spyros Kyprianou, who is paying a two-day official visit to Poland.
