    [01] House President - Warsaw - Meetings

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- President of the Polish Sejm (parliament) Maceij Plazynski said Cyprus should not become a victim of the 25-year Turkish occupation of the northern part of the island in its effort to become a member of the European Union.

    Plazynski made the statement during a meeting in Warsaw with President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou who is officially visiting Poland, heading a parliamentary delegation, at Plazynski's invitation.

    [02] Accident - Lorry - Five dead

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Five people, two Greek Cypriot children and three other persons reported to be foreigners, were killed and some eight others injured in an accident yesterday when a lorry careered out of control in the western coastal town of Paphos.

    The lorry hit onto six cars before overturning. Police believe that the truck had a problem with its breaks.

    [03] Waite - Visit - British Bases

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Terry Waite, CBE, the former archbishop of Cantebury's Special Envoy, held hostage in Beirut for five years, will be in Cyprus to give a lecture in the British Bases in Akrotiri.

    Waite was last in RAF Akrotiri during a stop over after he was released from captivity. He was held hostage between 1987 and 1991. Between 1981 and 1985 he had negotiated the release of British hostages in Iran.

    [04] Cyprus - Protocol on transfer of sentenced persons

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus has signed the Additional Protocol to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons.

    Ambassador Thalia Petrides, Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the Council of Europe, signed this text yesterday, in the presence of Walter Schwimmer, Secretary General of the Organisation.

    [05] IRIS - CYTA - Launched

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- The operational services of IRIS Gateway Satellite Services, a joint venture between Cyprus Telecommunications Authority's (CYTA) subsidiary company (DIGIMED) and Merlin Communications International, was launched here last night.

    IRIS Gateway Satellite Services provides turnaround services from its state-of-the-art facilities at the Makarios Earth Station in Cyprus, offering customers high quality links between Europe and Asia.

    [06] Clerides - Hercus - New York

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) -- Outgoing Special Representative of the UN Secretary- General in Cyprus and Chief of Mission of UNFICYP, Dame Ann Hercus, will be in New York next week to brief for the last time UN senior officials.

    Hercus resigned in July, citing family reasons. She remains in her post until the end of September.
