    [01] Greece - G8 - Cyprus

Nicosia, Jun 16 (CNA) -- Greece believes that a statement on Cyprus by the Foreign Ministers of the G8 is a positive move and provides an opportunity for the resumption of peace talks, if the Turkish side decides to seize it.

The G8 ministers urge their leaders due to meet later this week in Cologne to back UN efforts to reach a settlement in Cyprus on the basis of UN resolutions and recommended that the UN Secretary-General invites the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to talks without preconditions.

"The G8 statement is a positive development and offers a new opportunity, provided the Turkish side responds positively, for the resumption of the intercommunal dialogue under the UN Secretary-General and in the UN framework," Greek Alternate Foreign Minister Yiannos Kranidiotis has said.

He welcomed the ministers' discussion on Cyprus, saying this underlines that the Cyprus problem is primarily an international political problem for which the international community has responsibility.

The Greek official said a successful outcome of this process, in conjunction with Cyprus' European prospects, would allow the Cypriots to enjoy a hopeful future in Europe.

"We look forward to the statement being adopted by the heads of state of the G8," Kranidiotis said.

Efforts for a settlement in Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, have been stalled because of unacceptable and out of UN context preconditions set by the Turkish side.

Turkish demands include recognition of the illegal entity created in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus and withdrawal of Cyprus' membership application to the European Union.
