[01] Acting FM - US Ambassador - Clarifications

Nicosia, Jun 15 (CNA) -- The government is going to seek clarifications from the US concerning American criticism of two Cypriot political parties, in relation to NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia, Government Spokesman Costas Serezis said here today.

"Acting Foreign Minister, Finance Minister Takis Clerides, will meet US Ambassador Kenneth Brill concerning the position of the American embassy towards the Democratic Party (DIKO) and left-wing AKEL party," Serezis said.

Last week DIKO and AKEL expressed dissatisfaction with a US embassy statement that party members had not accepted invitations to embassy sponsored events in recent weeks, but only went to the embassy to demonstrate against NATO's air raids in Yugoslavia.

Last week an AKEL spokesman said that diplomatic missions should respect political parties and DIKO president Spyros Kyprianou said he is not anti-American but pro Cyprus.

Earlier today Kyprianou said after a meeting with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides that the government will try to establish whether the American remarks reflect Washington's views or whether the embassy position was decided locally.

"I have nothing to add to what Kyprianou said on the matter. The government will hear first hand about what has happened and I cannot preempt anything," the spokesman said.

[02] Famagusta mayor - Turkish occupation

Nicosia, Jun 15 (CNA) -- The Famagusta municipality today once again called on the UN and all foreign governments to take immediate and effective measures to end the 25-year Turkish occupation of 37 per cent of Cyprus' territory.

In a letter to the UN Secretary-General, the mayor of this Turkish occupied town, Andreas Pougiouros, protests the illegal arrival of a Turkish Navy ship in the closed port of Famagusta.

These illegal and provocative actions by the Turkish occupiers will not stop as long as the UN and the world's powerful countries do not put an end to them, he says.

Pougiouros calls on them to act for the withdrawal of the Turkish troops and settlers from Cyprus and the return of the Greek Cypriots to their homes.

He says only they have the power to end the illegal Turkish occupation of part of Cyprus so that international law and human rights and freedoms are respected.

    [06] Cyprus - France - Defence Ministers

Nicosia, Jun 15 (CNA) -- French Defence Minister Alain Richard today praised the Cyprus government's determination to seek a peaceful settlement to the political problem on the island and its stance on the Yugoslav crisis.

In a meeting with his Cypriot counterpart Yiannakis Chrysostomis in Paris, Richard said his country backs efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem based on UN resolutions and supports smooth progress in Cyprus' course for European Union (EU) accession.

Chrysostomis is in France at the invitation of his French counterpart to visit the Paris Air Show.

An official press release said the two defence ministers discussed mainly issues of bilateral relations and cooperation.

The Cypriot Defence Minister thanked France for upholding international law on the Cyprus issue and reiterated that the government is willing to enter into negotiations without any preconditions, based on UN resolutions.

On his part Richard welcomed the Cyprus government's position in efforts for a settlement on the island and its conformity with the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy, as this was recently expressed in the Kosovo crisis.

The Cyprus government has aligned itself with the EU embargo against Yugoslavia.

The French Minister said he understands Cyprus' need to boost its defences, as a result of the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of 37 per cent of the island's territory.

He said European countries believe that ways to promote a peaceful and just settlement in Cyprus must be found and expressed the hope that progress will be achieved soon.
