    [01] Cyprus - Nuclear materials - US

Nicosia, Jun 16 (CNA) -- The government is taking steps with the help of highly sophisticated equipment to combat the trafficking of illegal substances and materials, Government Spokesman Costas Serezis said here today.

He was commenting on a front-page report in Greek language daily "Politis" that the US have installed at two locations state of the art electronic equipment to detect nuclear, radioactive and chemical materials, used in the production of weapons of mass destruction.

"The US have responded to a request by the government of the Republic to supply them with high tech equipment to detect drugs, weapons, prohibited goods and substances as well as nuclear material," Serezis said.

He said that this type of equipment has already been installed at Limassol port and Larnaca International Airport as part of the cooperation among countries to prevent and combat the illegal transfer of prohibited substances.

The report said the authorities have seized a reactor used in the production of nuclear energy, which originated from the Ukraine and was destined for Iran.

"The European Union considers our policy on this matter as very positive," the spokesman said.

The government, he added, would like to see its efforts to combat this problem acknowledged.

[02] Acting Foreign Minister - US Ambassador

Nicosia, Jun 16 (CNA) -- US Ambassador to Cyprus, Kenneth Brill, has given clarifications to the government concerning American criticism of two Cypriot political parties on their stance on NATO bombing against Yugoslavia.

Brill was summoned today to meet Acting Foreign Minister, Finance Minister Takis Klerides, to give his side of the story, which erupted last week, after a US embassy statement was critical of local reaction to the NATO-led air raids.

"Klerides, as Acting Foreign Minister, met this morning with Ambassador Brill, who gave his replies on the issues the minister has raised," Government Spokesman, Costas Serezis said.

He said Klerides will brief political party leaders on his meeting tomorrow, but refrained from giving any further details.

The spokesman said the government will outline its views on the matter in the next couple of days.

Serezis said that Klerides has already briefed President Glafcos Clerides and President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou.

Last week centre-right DIKO and left-wing AKEL expressed dissatisfaction with a US embassy statement that party members had not accepted invitations to embassy sponsored events in recent weeks, but only went to the embassy to demonstrate against NATO's air raids in Yugoslavia.

Opposition parties and other organisations have staged protest rallies against the war in Yugoslavia and demonstrators have often marched to the US embassy building to denounce NATO air raids.

    [03] Central Bank - Eurobonds

Nicosia, Jun 16 (CNA) -- The Republic of Cyprus has issued Eurobonds abroad, through its Central Bank, with a nominal sum of 280 million Euros.

The seven-year Eurobonds bring an annual coupon of 5 per cent while the yield at the time of issue was 5,126 per cent.

The issue, the third through the Euro Medium Term Note Programme of the Republic which amounts to one billion US dollars, was very successful, according to a statement by the Central Bank of Cyprus.

The large demand displayed by foreign investors has covered the sum of the issue of the bonds.

The joint lead managers of the issue were Merrill Lynch International and Warburg Dillon Read.
