  • [01] President Emil Constantinescu promulgated the bill that alters Order 66 of 1997

    The President of Romania signed the bill that alters Order 66 of 1997 regarding exemption of taxes on salaries and revenues for foreign specialists that work in Romania as part of loan agreements and programmes meant to develop the economic and social life of Romania.

    [02] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu is asking the authorized officials to supervize the capital market

    Prime Minister of Romania met with Finance Minister Decebal Traian Remes, with the Governor of the National Bank of Romania and other officials whom he asked to pay increased attention to information given the population and specialists according to which foreign investments are less than real. Measures should be adopted by the National Bank of Romania to supervize the capital market together with the Finance Ministry.

    [03] Inauguration of the WASHINGTON GROUP Company working in Romania

    Monday the town of Ploiesti hosted the inauguration of the WASHINGTON GROUP Company in the presence of Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu and of the United States Ambassador to Romania, James Rosapepe. The group is financed from Washington in totto and ensures 275 job opportunities to specialists in computerized projects. United States Ambassador said in his address delivered after that of the Prime Minister of the country who wished much success to the venture that the choice of the American partner was triggered by the very good training of the Romanian specialists.

    [04] Non repayble funds for Romania

    Foreign Minister Petre Roman and the Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Romania, Fokion Fotiadis, signed in Bucharest three documents that are the basis for 230 million euros given Romania to implement the PHARE programme and the programmes of transfrontier cooperation with Bulgaria and Hungary.

    [05] Accords signed by Romania and the European Bank for Investments

    According to the documents already signed Romania receives almost 400 million USD for projects in transportation. Stress is laid on the modernization of rail roads, of the Bucharest subway, the ecologization of the harbor of Constanta. A start to rehabilitate national roads with the help of a loan worth 245 million euros was signed at the Ministry of Public Transportation by Cabinet Minister Anca Boagiu, Bucharest General Mayor Traian Basescu and the vicepresident of the European Bank of Investments, Wolfgang Roth.

    [06] All parliamentary parties of Romania support the Cabinet programme for the institutionalized children

    The signing of the Cabinet programme to this aim was postoned by a week at the request of three of the Parliamentary political parties that asked for some time to analyze the content of the programme following a report of the government. Nevertheless all the parliamentary political parties declared they agreed to support the Cabinet in the efforts to do away with the communist legacy in as far as institutionalized children are concerned.

    [07] The Cabinet of Romania passed the rezolution which provides for the doubling of the state allowance for school children

    Starting November the monthly allowance for each of the school children of Romania is of 130 000 lei per month. The increase is in the first place meant to assist the younger families that have lower incomes.

    [08] Meat could cost more on Christmas

    The National Association of Meat Producers says the request for meat and meat products will be met on the markets of the country but that prices could increase by 10 per cent for raw meat and 5 - 6 per cent for meat products, if the Romanian state does not cut down taxes at the level of the European Union.

    [09] Chief Commander of South West NATO Command is to visit Bucharest

    Lieutenant general Juan Naro Romero started a visit to Bucharest, Romania, at the invitation of Head of the General Chiefs of Staff of the Romanian army, army general Mihail Popescu.

    On the agenda there are the strategy and actions of our country for integration in EuroAtlantic structures, Romania as a provider of security in the Central and East European area, results of the Romanian army in the process of restructure and modernization and experience during the peace keeping actions.

    [10] Romanian - Hungarian military exercises

    In Hungary, at Taborfalva, start of the exercises of the Mixed Romanian - Hungarian unit as part of the larger exercise called OPEN WINDOWS 2000. The Romanian and Hungarian military are to practise guarding and accompanying VIP'S, guard of refugee camps, control and disarming of mobs and other operations as part of peace keeping.

    [11] Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church is visiting Poland

    His Beatitude Teoctist is visiting Poland at the invitation of His Beatitude Sava, Metropolitan of Warsaw and of entire Poland and His Eminence Josef Glemp, Primate of the Polish Catholic Church. Besides visits to various cultural and civilization objectives of which churches hold prime of place, the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church has talks with all the important officials of the Polish state starting with the President. His Beatitude Teoctist receives the title of DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSA of the University of Lublin, reads among other things a communique of the Press Bureau of the Patriarch of Romania.

    Plenum debates of the Chamber of Deputies.

    The Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, His Beatitude Teoctist, now on a visit to Poland, receives the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Catholic Lublin University.

    The Central Electoral Bureau hosts a new meeting with representatives of non-government organizations with a view to have their observers at the general elections of 26 Nov.

    PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - forwards a simple motion in the Parliament today on the theme of privatizations.

    United States Ambassador to Romania James Rosapepe invites Romanian media to watch the programme organized on the occasion of the Presidential Elections of the United States tonight starting 21:00 at Citybank Uzinexport Building, 8, Iancu de Hunedoara Boulevard.

    Sofia, Bulgaria, hosts the ceremony of attributing the name of the national poet of Romania, Mihai Eminescu, to a segment of the Sitniakovo Boulevard where the embassy of Romania is also located.

    The ceremony of awarding prizes by the management of the National Bank of Romania to 25 school students that study in 16 counties of Romania and who obtained prizes at various science Olympiads this year all over the world.
