    [02] Session of the Supreme Council for the defense of the country

    The President of Romania Emil Constantinescu has chaired the session of the Supreme Council for the Defense of the Country during which he said that the main scourges affecting our society and which have been ailing our life are the following: the oil Mafia, the destruction of our merchant fleet and of the chemical fertilizers producing industry, cigarette, drug and alcohol smuggling which have been affecting the economy of Romania and have been endangering the security of the country since 1990. The President of the country asked the magistrates to hurry with the solving of the dossiers that for some nine years now have not been completed by the judiciary system although police and District Attorney Offices have long concluded work.

    [03] Inauguration of the HOT LINE OF THE ROMANIAN PRIME MINISTER

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu inaugurated the toll free telephone line which is called THE HOT LINE OF THE PRIME MINISTER. The project is financed by the World Bank and as stressed by the Romanian Prime Minister is very important as it allows for direct contact with the citizens of the country. One dials 018080888 from any point in Romania cell network DIALOG included and is in contact with any of the officials in charge for that time of the day, as the line is operational from Monday to Friday included from 08:00 to 20:00 and all issues and questions are answered by the counselors of the Prime Minister or by the ministries in charge.

    [04] Summer University of Izvorul Muresului

    The participants at the Summer University of Izvorul Muresului have continued debates on the issue EUROPE OF NATIONS OR EUROPE OF REGIONS which will be rounded off by talks on European experience as well as peculiarities of the area Covasna Harghita.

    The debate on the issue MAJORITY AND MINORITY, EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE AND WHAT IS SPECIFIC TO THE COVASNA HARGHITA AREA. The participants in the debates have reached the conclusion that the Romanians living in the Covasna Harghita area feel neglected and deserted by the Government of Romania. Prefect of the Covasna Harghita region Mr. Gheorghe Tatu said that while all the issues of the Magyars living in Romania are amplified, very little of the suffering of the Romanians living in this area where the majority is made up of Magyars is known outside the region and outside the country. In his turn the head of the Gendarmes Command of Harghita who is colonel Ion Roman believes that the gap between the Magyar and the Romanian Communities deepened following historical prejudice and negative clichees of politicians and media.

    [05] United States Ambassador to Romania, James Rosapepe, is now visiting county Neamt

    In the village of Raucesti, the United States Ambassador Jim Rosapepe was presented by the mayor of the village Constantin Vlad three projects which might be of interest to the United States investors and namely water supply, methane gas pipe lining of the village and modernization of infrastructure.

    The president of Romania, Emil Constantinescu attends at Popesti - Leordeni the ceremony of unveiling the monument devoted to the memory of the 44 hero martyrs that were murdered in December of 1989 and whose remains were secretly burned; then the ashes were scattered in the area of the village of Popesti - Leordeni.

    Extraordinary congress of PNL - on this occasion the announcement is made of the candidacy of Theodor Stolojan to the Presidency of Romania.

    Session of the National Leadership Council of PNTCD - CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL PEASANT PARTY.

    At the seat of the Foreign Ministry of Romania the ceremony takes place of introducing to the Romanian audience and public opinion the three Japanese volunteers that will work in this country for two years as profesors and instructors of Japanese language and civilization.

    The Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church His Beatitude Teoctist is making a visit to Russia at the invitation of the Patriarch of Moscow and of the entire Russia, His Sanctity Alexei.

    Official launching in Romania in the presence of Mrs. Susan Johnson, number two of the United States Embassy to Romania, of the PATRIOT, with Mel Gibson, at the Hollywood Multiplex Bucharest Mall later today.
