[02] Session of the Council for the Defense of the Country
The Supreme Council for the Defense of the Country has met in session
earlier today to discuss and analyze the main demarches for the combatting
of corruption in Romania as well as the proper actions to do away with this
phenomenon, the measures to ensure the energy independence of the country
this winter and other measures and actions. At the same time the Council
examines the proposal to create the National Security Authority.
[03] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu will run for the office of president of
Romania
In a letter to the group that supports his candidacy for the office of
president of Romania Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu specifies that he will
officially announce his candidacy to the office of president of Romania
when the 300,000 signatures are gathered in as requested by law. The
promoter of the support group is professor Nicolae Manolescu who said that
the necessary number of signatures will be on paper in a month. Among the
personalities that support the candidacy of Mugur Isarescu is also the
present Finance Minister Decebal Traian Remes who is a member of the
National Liberal Party.
The Senate of the National Liberal Party supports the condidacy of Prime
Minister Mugur Isarescu to the office of president of the country while the
first vicepresident of the Party and others support the candidacy of
Theodor Stolojan to the same office. Valeriu Stoica who is the first
vicepresident of the party said that if the Congress of the PNL would stand
for Stolojan then Remes would have to back away and leave the National
Liberal Party.
[04] President Emil Constantinescu has received the CIA Director George
Tenet in Bucharest
President Emil Constantinescu received at the Cotroceni Palace the CIA
Director George Tenet who was the guest of Bucharest as part of his Eastern
European tour. Among the issue discussed prime of place was held by
combatting transfrontier crime and fighting organized crime as well as drug
traffic and smuggling. Before meeting with the president of Romania the CIA
Director met with the Romanian Chief of Foreign Services Catalin Harnagea.
[05] President of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - Ion Iliescu
has sent a letter to the President of the United States Bill Clinton
Ion Iliescu sent the President of the United States Bill Clinton a letter
on Wednesday in which he appreciates his initiatives to unblock the peace
process between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. The President of the
Social Democracy Party of Romania appreciates the efforts of the United
States President to have talks and negociations at Camp David again. Ion
Iliescu also sent letters to the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and to
President Yasser Arafat encouraging them to continue the difficult peace
process.
[06] The Summer University IZVORUL MURESULUI
Participants at the third edition of the Summer University IZVORUL
MURESULUI which is unfolding under the motto EUROPEAN INTEGRATION AND
NATIONAL IDENTITY debated on Wednesday the theme A EUROPE OF REGIONS OR A
EUROPE OF NATIONS. Debates were carried on for the preservation and
affirmation of the values and assets specific to nations and ethnic groups
in the new architecture of Europe.

Under the leadership of President Emil Constantinescu the session has taken
place of the Supreme Council for the Defense of the country earlier today.
Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu has inaugurated the toll free telephone line
linking the entire country to the seat of the Cabinet from Monday to
Friday.
A Romanian Government delegation led by secretary of state Viorel Badea,
Head of the Department for Relations with the Romanians living outside the
country, is now in Bulgaria to attend the third edition of the Vlach
Festival of Dances and Songs - VIDIN 2000.
The Ambassador of the United States to Romania, James Rosapepe, has
inaugurated the medical units of Manoleasa and Ungureni, two villages in
county Botosani, northern Moldova, which were repaired and refurbished with
money from the United States Administration.

In 1872 birth of Traian Vuia who was an engineer and an inventor. one of
the pioneers of world aviation.
Of the International Events of the Day : Convention of the United States
Democratic Party that today officially nominates the vicepresident of the
present Administration, Al Gore, as the candidate of the Democratic Party
to the office of president of the United States of America.
