[01] Statement of President Emil Constantinescu referring to the election
of Vladimir Putin as President of the Russian Federation
In a statement taken over by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the President of
Romania, Emil Constantinescu appreciated the success of Vladimir Putin
which was " foreseeable " adding that this " is a good thing as this is
also a sign of stability ". The President of Romania estimated that the
election of Mr. Putin as President of the Russian Federation " is an
important token of stability of this big country which has played and will
always play an important role in world politics, a token that the reforms
which were begun in Russia would continue as would the policy of opening of
that country ". The president of Romania estimated that for our country "
this is an important moment both from the political point of view and in as
far as the relaunching of relations between our two countries is concerned,
as part of OSCE and in the economic domain where everybody expects an
increase of the economic relations and of the commercial exchanges between
our countries ". RADOR
[02] Romanian Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu has had talks with Andrew
Vorkink, manager for Romania of the World Bank
Next week a team of the World Bank will arrive in Bucharest to monitor the
PSAL one and two projects, this being one of the news items learned by the
media at the end of the Isarescu - Vorkink talks in Bucharest last night
which also included the conclusion that Mr. Vorkink agrees with the
Romanian Prime Minister to get the World Bank interested in programmes to
protect Romanian areas from ecology disasters. Romanian Prime Minister
assured the Manager for Romania of the World Bank that the strategy of our
country on a medium term will be carried on although the year 2000 is an
electoral year. RADOR
[03] Bulgaria and Romania will build a bridge across the river Danube
The Prime Ministers of the two countries, Mugur Isarescu and Ivan Kostov
signed in Bucharest on Monday the protocole regarding the building of
another bridge across the river Danube in the area Calafat - Vidin. The
signing ceremony at the Victoria Palace, the seat of the Romanian Cabinet,
was also witnessed by the Romanian President and the Special Coordinator of
the Pact of stability in the Balkans, Bodo Hombach, informs RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALITATI. Prime Minister Isarescu said at the press conference which
followed that important for Romania was the fact that the building of the
bridge is accompanied by the laying out of infrastructure ways which cross
the Jiu Valley, a less favored region of Romania, which leads to new job
opportunities in the area. In his turn Prime Minister Kostov said he was
very happy with the signing of the protocole and as soon as cirscumstances
allow he will hold auction for building the bridge. Total value of the
bridge and infrastructure up to Hungary crossing Romania is of one million
dollars, American. RADOR
[04] Accord between the Government of Romania and the World Bank for the
support of agriculture
Monday the Ministry of finance of this country hosted the signing ceremony
of the agreement between the Cabinet of Romania and the World Bank for a
financial support of agricultural services in this country. The total cost
of the project is of 18 million USD of which 11 million is the loan given
by the World Bank. 3.9 million are supplied by the Cabinet of Romania while
almost 3 million are the contribution of some other parties. The loan is
given for a 20 year interval with a grace period of five years, and
interest rates are standard rates of the Bank. RADORRADOR
[05] Counsellor of the European Union Jose Cutileiro visits Bucharest
The special counsellor with the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union,
Mr. Jose Cutileiro, met with the foreign minister of Romania, Mr. Petre
Roman. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the two officials
discussed about aspects linked to the developments of European policy of
security and defense, the institutional reform of the European Union in the
perspective of its expansion, other priorities of the Portuguese presidency
of the Union linked to the process of enlargement and foreign policy and of
joint security. During his Romanian visit the Portuguese diplomat will also
be received by the President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu.

Parliament met with the Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, Ion Diaconescu

Parliament met with the Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies Ion Diaconescu
as well as with members of the Romanian Parliamentary Commission for
European integration. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI the talks
were focused on the present stage of the preparations for adherence and
harnomization of Romanian laws and bills to this aim, strategy on medium
term presented by our country in Brussels and the way the Romanians are
supporting actions of integration.
