[01] Ceremony at the Cotroceni Palace
On Sunday at the Cotroceni Palace a ceremony unfolded of promoting to the
rank of air squadron Brigadier General or Rear-Admiral a number of colonels
in the retreat, war veterans of the National Defense Ministry and the
Interior Ministry.President Emil Constantinescu delivered a homage paying
speech to the entire army and to those that have or do serve in the
Ministry of the Interior. The President said the army is now witnessing a
deep going process of rebuilding on the way to being integrated in a
powerful security structure while the example of devotion and tenacity of
the war veterans in serving the nation is taken over by the younger
generation of military of this country.The ceremony was occasioned by 9 May
which is Independence Day in this country and also is V Day Europe, RADIO

[02] Debates of the Ministerial Council of the European Union
Debates of the Ministerial Council of the European Union will unfold at
Bremen, Germany, on Monday and Tuesday, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs
its listeners. Germany is the President of the European Union for now.
Romania will be represented at the Ministerial Council debates by Foreign
Minister Andrei Plesu and by National Defense Minister Victor Babiuc.RADOR]
[03] Statement of Defense Minister Victor Babiuc
Defense Minister Victor Babiuc made a statement regarding NATO summit of
Washington on Sunday estimating that NATO's enlargement is one of the most
important elements of building up security in the Euro-Atlantic area.
Minister of Defense is of the opinion that Romania is now facing a new
stage on its way to become a full member of the Alliance, however, military
training having to be harmonized with general national effort for meeting
joining exigencies in the political,economic,budget and legal domains.
"What we have done this far is a solid basis for the future while the
economic and military reforms must be continued most energetically" it is
also mentioned in the statement of Defense Minister Babiuc as RADIO ROMANIA

[04] ACADEMIA CIVICA of Romania presents Pope John Paul 2-nd photographic
album
President of the Foundation ACADEMIA CIVICA Mrs. Ana Blandiana presented
visiting Pope John Paul 2-nd a photographic album from the "Memorial of the
victims of communism and of resistance" an album which was released in
honour of the Pope's visit to Bucharest. A communique of the Press Bureau
of the ACADEMIA CIVICA Foundation mentioned by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI
shows that the album has photographs of 41 priests and men of the cloth
belonging to the Roman-Catholic and Greek-Catholic Churches tortured and
killed at the Sighet prison.In his sermon at the Saint Joseph Cathedral of
Bucharest on Saturday the Pope paid most vibrating respects to the martyrs
and believers of the Catholic Church and of Romania. RADOR
