Communique of the Press Bureau of the Presidency of Romania
The Press Bureau of the Presidency of Romania issued a communique following
the fact that media were told there will be an airport fee for newsmen that
wish to be present at the Baneasa airport when Pope Paul John 2-nd starts
his Romanian visit. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI the communique
reads among other things;"the decision was made by the Ministry of
Transports at the request of the SC Baneasa International Airport of
Bucharest" and that"the Presidency is not involved and has not supported
this initiative at all as the Presidency considers that the right to free
information comes first before some national interests which in these
conditions could endanger mirroring by massmedia of a paramountly important
event for our country". RADOR

[01] Session of the Chamber of Deputies Plenum suspended as there was no
quorum
Session of the Plenum of the Chamber of Deputies was suspended Wednesday as
there was no quorum and the MPies did not pass any of the draft laws on the
agenda.First were debates on the draft law regarding structure and work of
the Government and of the ministries.As no Cabinet member was present in
the room for this point on the agenda the session Chairman decided to pass
on to the second which was amending and completing Electoral Law,a draft of
the Party for Social Democracy of Romania -PDSR. Session chairman Mrs.
Paula Ivanescu then noted that of the 267 people that would have made a
full house present were only 103.As there was no quorum the session was

[02] Work went on in the Mediating Commission of the Senate and the Chamber
of Deputies at the Ordinance for completing and amending education law
The Commission continued debates at the Parliament Palace on Wednesday.
According to the commission religious denominations in this country have
the right to have private education institutes without any religious
character by observing legal provisions that pertain to private education

[03] Head of Local Public Administration Vlad Rosca met with officials of
county Maramures, Northern Romania
Mr. Vlad Rosca who is Head of Local Public Administration met with
officials of county Maramures and spoke about the Local Financing Law whose
operation is rather difficult and generates problems for mayors offices of
county Maramures.Mr. Rosca also asked a number of questions related to
spending public money to repair damaged roads in the wake of floods and

[04] Nicolae Idu was appointed secretary of state with the Department for
European Integration
By decision of the PM of Romania Mr. Nicolae Idu was appointed secretary of
state at the Department of European integration, national coordinator of
community aquis political analysis with a view to EU integration of Romania,
reads press note from the Government, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports.

[05] President of PDSR -Party for Social Democracy of Romania- touring
county Prahova
PDSR President Ion Iliescu drove to county Prahova yesterday where he
visited the S C Di Apollo company, SA Ploiesti Industria Carnii meat
processing company and SCG Scaieni after which he attended general assembly
of PDSR organization of Boldesti-Scaieni town. According to RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALITATI yesterday afternoon Mr. Iliescu met with inhabitants of the
town of Ploiesti in the Nord agro-industrial market and answered questions
at a press conference at the seat of PDSR Prahova. RADOR
[06] ApR asks for the dismissal of Minister of Agriculture
ApR demanded the resignation of minister of agriculture Ioan Muresan at the
press conference of Wednesday motivating its demand by the fact that
according to data supplied by the millers and bread makers Employers Union
Romania is under the threat of biggest bread crisis this summer.Mr. Nicolae
Popa who is vicepresident of ApR and who is mentioned by RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALITATI said the Ministry of Agriculture was informed of this situation
already last January but did not adopt any measure for solving it.ApR
leaders added that wheat will soon sell for much increased prices while a
70 to 80 per cent rise of the cost of bread is to be expected. RADOR

[07] Historic visit to Romania
[08] Statement of Pope Paul John 2-nd before Romanian visit
The Pope visits Romania between 7 - 9 May and he said at the Vatican
yesterday, addressing our people, the following:"Dear Romanians I am happy
to be in your midst. I am conveying my love and respect to all of you".
According to EFE News Agency mentioned by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI the
Pope specified during the general reception at the Vatican yesterday that
it was for the first time he would visit a country where Christians are
mostly Orthodox. The Pope added he was happy he was taking this trip aimed
at strengthening ties between Romania and the Holy See which have been so
important for the history of Christianity in this vast geographical region.
"I am going to Romania in the name of Christ on the threshold of the Third
Millenium" said the Pope who wished happiness and peace to all Orthodox and
Catholic Romanians. RADOR
[09] The Ambassador of Romania to the Vatican about the Romanian visit of
the Pope
The Ambassador of Romania to the Holy See Theodor Baconsky made a statement
for RADIO VATICANA which is mentioned by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI
according to which the Government of Romania is fully aware of the historic
importance of the visit paid by the Pope to Romania also in the context of
building future Europe.Mr. Baconsky added that Romania has demonstrated
that it can be an element of balance in the Balkans as it has very good
relations with all its neighbours and it has solved all inter ethnic

[10] Increased security measures during the Pope's Romanian visit
"Security measures adopted by Romanian authorities of Bucharest are

More than half of the men and women of the Protection and Security Service
that is to say 700 people are mobilized for the visit of the Pope to
Bucharest. Romanian officials also have the medical file of the Pope for
emergency action. A special antenna for such situations was installed at
the Bucharest residence of the Nuncio while a helicopter is ready to fly at
any moment. At the same time a mobile unit assisted by Romanian doctors is
part of the motorcade; naturally the Pope's personal physician is near the
Pontiff who will be 79 in two weeks. RADOR

An Austrian Parliamentary delegation led by the President of the National
Council of the Republic of Austria Mr. Heinz Fischer is now on a visit to

Wednesday afternoon foreign minister Andrei Plesu met with the President of
the Austrian National Council Mr. Heinz Fischer now on a visit to
Romania.Bilateral ties are excellent, underlined the two interlocutors,
adding that the Romanian visit of the Austrian President of last March was
a consistent impulse to political relations and an important signal for
Austrian investors.RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs that talks also dealt
with the Kosovo crisis, the necessity of a political solution being
mentioned in the context to allow refugees go back to their homes and
ensure a climate of trust regarding rights of minorities. With reference to
the post conflict prospects Romania's foreign minister Andrei Plesu
presented the initiatives of Romania especially in his capacity as
President of South Eastern Cooperation. Also approached were issues linked
to the building of a strategy of prosperity, stability and security in the
area, the consolidation of democratic institutions and the civil society.

President of the Chamber of Deputies Mr. Ion Diaconescu met with the
delegation of the Austrian Parliament led by President of the National

[14] Romanian defense minister Victor Babiuc attended the Paris Conference
organized by the Strategic and International Relations Institute
The Pact of stability for South Eastern Europe supported by the European
Union and the United States is the solution for building normal situation
in the region, underlined Minister of Defense Victor Babiuc in Paris.In a
statement to the media when he returned back to Bucharest Mr. Babiuc
mentioned security of the Balkans and the role of Russia in the new
security architecture of Europe as having been approached at the Paris
Conference of the Stretegic and International Relations Institute. While in
France Mr. Babiuc also met with his French opposite number Alain Richard
with whom he discussed the possible involvement of French military in
training Romanian Army with a view to Romania's joining NATO. Victor Babiuc

A delegation of German-Dutch Mixed Corps Army officers is now at Craiova

Brig.Gen.Ionel George, commander of the MIHAI VITEAZUL Third Army Corps and
by local officials.Administration of crisis situations will be discussed

[17] National Broadcasting Council asks for Parliamentary accord to
rebroadcast VOA Serbian language programmes
National Broadcasting Council asked for the accord of the Romanian
Parliament for a rebroadcast of VOA Serbian language programmes from the
territory of Romania.The request was first relayed to the National
Broadcasting Council that are of the opinion the Audiovisual Law does not
have any provision in this sense. Romanian Foreign Ministry agreed with the
request, the Agency of Communications says that there are technical
facilities for a rebroadcast from Romania of the Serbian language
programmes of the VOA. The Permanent Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies is
of the opinion that this issue does not come within the competence of

[18] IMF could give supplimentary loans to Romania
The IMF announced that it could give supplimentary loans to Romania next
June. According to CNN INTERNATIONAL, the IMF say it waits for Romanian
Government to clarify stand on reform and taxes. Romania has asked for a
loan worth 475 million USD and we now need far more as war in Yugoslavia
has negative impact on the economy of Romania and brings about significant
financial losses.Romania is one of the four central European states that
have asked to be considered a front line country and which ask to join the

[19] President of the FPS -State Ownership Fund- Radu Sarbu about activity
in Timisoara for privatizing small and medium sized companies
According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI President of the FPS - State
Ownership Fund - Radu Sarbu has been in Timisoara to assess situation at
COMTIM and activity of privatizing small and medium sized companies.He said
liquidating COMTIM does not mean total ceasing of activity of that company:
Mr. Sarbu appreciated the activity of the FPS Timisoara branch in
privatizing small and medium sized companies. RADOR
[20] l5 German Companies will have about 45000 employees in county Gorj
President of the National Federation of the Mining Trade Unions of Romania
Marin Condescu said a group of 15 German companies wish to create about
45000 job opportunities in our country, in county Gorj. According to RADIO
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI the Trade Union leader visited respective companies in
Germany and concluded agreements of collaboration with COLGATE PALMOLIVE,
BMW,AUDI,SIEMENS,SOLINGEN and others.They want to set up joint venture with
51 per cent of the stock. Marin Condescu said he found two areas where the
companies could invest and namely Bumbesti-Jiu and Tirgu-Carbunesti.
