[01] Democratic Party prepares laws for improving social security
Democratic Party (PD) proposed to its partners in the governing coalition
to ask the Government to try to give up the rule governing policy, Radu
Berceanu, vice-president of the party stated at the press conference on
Thursday. He added that the great problems of reform have somehow been
solved and that the time has come for the Parliament to start approving
Government decisions. That is why PD has prepared series of laws for
improving the public social security level. After being achieved, the
programme will be discussed with other Government members and it will be
handed to the Parliament for approval. Mr Berceanu said that his party does
not support the opposition's proposal to call up for a special session of
the Parliament. RADOR, August 22
[02] Proposal to call up for a special session of the Chamber of Deputies
has been rejected
The Heads of the Parliamentary groups Adrian Nastase - PDSR, Iulio Furo -
PRM, Mircea Valcu - PUNR asked through a letter handed over to the
spokesman of the Chamber of Deputies to call up for a meeting of the
Permanent Chamber Bureau in order to decide calling up for the special
session of the Chamber, according to the art. in the Constitution. During
the special session of the Chamber the members of these parliamentary
groups are expected to discuss some of the actual problems the Romanian
society is facing. The vice president of the Democratic Party said that
calling up for a special session of the Parliament is a "mioritic licence".
Radu Berceanu said that a meeting of the Permanent Chamber Bureau is due on
Monday, and that PD is against calling up for a special session. In his
turn, the PD senator Cristian Dumitrescu said that "it is a pathetic
attempt to escape with the help of the actual rulers from a place they
entered by their own will." The speaker of the Chamber, Ion Diaconescu,
that said that he sees no reason for calling up for a special session and
that there is not enough time to start such a procedure. RADOR, August 22
[03] Former Romanian sovereign King Michael I in Romania
Former Romanian sovereign King Michael I continued his visit in the
Bistrita- Nasaud county. In the Telciu village he was welcomed by many
villagers and he visited the village's cathedral. King Michael I also
stopped at the international sculpture camp in Sangeorz-Bai. In the
afternoon he stopped in the Nasaud area, where he is expected to visit the
Romanian writer Liviu Rebreanu's memorial house and the Museum of
Literature in the Cosbuc village, where the Romanian poet George Cosbuc was

[04] Romanian Prime Minister meets delegates of the agriculture trade
unions and employers
The Romanian Prime Minister met Wednesday night delegates of the
agrigulture unions and employers to discuss the strategy for privatisation
in this field. The Agriculture Autonomous Unions Federation AGROSTAR backed
off from the meeting saying that it is not willing to hold discussions in
the presence of budgetary unions. In an interviw with RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALUITATI, Mr Gheorghe Predila, president of the Romanian Private
Agricultors, referred to the issues they discussed: privatisation of the
agriculture, financing sources for this fall campaign and capitalisation of
this year's wheat and barley yield. RADOR, August 22
[05] RENEL will be reorganized
Power and gas trade unions have called on Wednesday for a meeting with the
Government aimed to negotiate reorganization of the branches in these
fields. The leader of the Nationl Union Confederation Dumitru Costin said
that they expect a growth of the economic efficiency of this sector,
together with an activation of a fair competition and also "the power field
to be useful to the citizens and to the tax payers because much of the
losses in the field were covered from taxes till now." The minister of
reform, Ulm Spineanu, also believes that the power price will reduce if the
restructuring is successful: "It will certainly become a market price. It
will no longer be preestabilshed, but the market itself will dictate its
amount, because all economic agents will secure by themselves the power
supplies through auction procedures". RADOR, August 22
[06] Romanian Government Funds for the Moldovan Ministry of Culture
The Romanian Government decided that 1 of the 5 billion lei fund for
relations with the Republic of Moldova will be under the direct control of
the Romanian Ministry of Culture. The money will be directed through
concrete programmes settled in cooperation with representatives of the
Moldovan Ministry of Culture: providing books in Romanian, theatre and
music cooperation actions and restoration of historic monuments. RADOR,

[07] Weather in Romania
Weather in Romania will be sunnyand warm in most of the country excepting
Oltenia, western Muntenia, southern Banat, Maramures and the mountain
regions whew heavy rains are expected. In Bucharest, the weather will be
sunny but colder for this time of the season mostly in the morning and at
night. Teperatures will range from 20 to 28 centigrades. RADOR, August 22
