  • [01] MEETING OF DEFENCE MINISTER WITH GERMAN AMBASSADOR IN TIRANA

    TIRANA, MARCH 16 (ATA)- In his first meeting with the ambassador of Germany in Tirana, Hans Peter Disdorn, Albanian Defence Minister Shaqir Vukaj pointed to the traditional relations of Albania with Germany.

    He asked that under Albania's current conditions bilateral cooperation should be further promoted, the spokesman of this institution reports.

    Expressing the government's opinion, minister Vukaj considered Germany among the key partners in the relations with Albania.

    Presenting aspects of the current situation at home and in the army, Vukaj underlined the need for German emergency aid in the field of logistics.

    German ambassador Disdorn, expressing the support of the National Reconciliation Government, stressed that under these conditions of grave situation, nothing hinders the development of the bilateral relations between the two countries.

    Disdorn expressed the need for further promoting cooperation in the military field, mentioning several directions in the mutual relations between the two armies, the spokesman of the Defence Ministry reports.s.sh/lm/sh/

    [02] DEMOBILISED OFFICERS IN DURRES HELP STABILISE SITUATION IN ARMY

    DURRES, MARCH 17 (ATA)- By S. Gjordeni, One hundred demobilised ex-officers and noncommissioned officers in the Durres district have been engaged in stabilising the situation in the army, responding to the call of the Government of National Reconciliation.

    The deputy chairman of Demobilised Officers' Association, Gezim Bega, told ATA that "working groups of officers and noncommissioned officers have joined the district Division and military unit headquarters and of the military marine to help in reorganising the army, collecting and systemising the weapons, munitions and military technique, adjust arms' depots and various military environments."/s.sh/lm/sh/

    [03] FROM YESTERDAY'S MEETING OF GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL RECONCILIATION

    TIRANA, MARCH 17 (ATA)- The Interior and Defence Ministers provided yesterday an information of the domestic situation, which is generally considered calmer, especially in Tirana, but also in Fier, Lushnje, Vlore and other towns, according the Premier's Press and Information Office.

    The work of the commissariats has been more organised, the people's movement more peaceful. The collection of weapons has also continued. But the situation in the city of Durres, in which there have been gatherings also from other districts at the Durres port, in an effort to leave the country, remains problematic.

    Meanwhile efforts have been made to guarantee normal functioning of the airport as well as of the transport military means.

    The participants at the meeting stressed that as regards the public order forces there will be no policeman without uniform and the police law will be applied.

    Later, the government meeting approved the draft-decision to hand over, gather and store the weapons and munition unlawfully seized.

    The Council of Ministers approved the draft-decree to exempt the imported wheat from the Value Added Tax until July 31,1997.

    The meeting also approved the draft-decision on fuel supply.

    At the end of the meeting the Council of Ministers decided to propose the parliament to create the new leading Council of Radio-Television, as well as remove the article of restricting media under the law of the state of emergency. s.sh/jz/lm/Z/

    [04] ALBANIAN-AMERICANS IN U.S. OBSERVED ALBANIA'S NATIONAL MOURNING DAY

    TIRANA, MARCH 17 (ATA) - On March 16, 1997, in the churches where the Albanians of America go every Sunday, prays were made for those who lost their lives during the latest unrest in Albania in the church of Shen Gjergj in Boston, in the Catholic Church Zoja e Shkodres in Bronx, in the Orthodox church of Shen Koll in Queens.

    This day was also commemorated in two Catholic churches in Detroit and in the Orthodox church of the northern city of James Town.

    The day of national mourning was proclaimed in the agreement by all the political forces reached on March 9, 1997 on the basis of the platform proposed by the President of the Republic Sali Berisha, in token of veneration for all the sons and daughters who lost their lives during the turmoil in Albania. The Albanian flag was also put half-mast in the Mission of Albania in the United Nations, to observe the national mourning in Albania, reports from this mission said. ssh/eva/xh/k

    [05] MOTHER TERESA PRAYS FOR ALBANIA

    TIRANA, MARCH 17 (ATA) - Albania's mission in the U.N. reports that late in the evening yesterday, one of the sisters of the Order of Mother Teresa, Jeanette Petrie, who is in New York, realised a telephone call between the Ambassador of Albania in the U.N. Pellumb Kulla and Mother Teresa in Calcutta.

    "In these days we are praying a lot for our country," said Mother Teresa. "God bless us!"

    Ambassador Kulla asked Mother Teresa about her health and if she was able to go to Albania these days because Albanians need her. Mother Teresa said she would go to Albania a little later, but she was planned to send to Albania two of her superiors and would give them a message for all Albanians. At the end of the talk, Mother Teresa said: "God bless Albania and the Albanians!" jz/xh/k

    [06] PRESIDENT BERISHA IS NOT TO BLAME FOR THE CHAOS IN ALBANIA - President of All-European Movement

    TIRANA, MARCH 17 (ATA) - The President of the All-European Movement, the oldest deputy in the European Parliament, Dr Otto Habsburg, said in relation to the situation created in Albania:

    "President Sali Berisha is not to blame for the chaos created in Albania. The causes of the unrest are the fraudulent pyramid schemes in Southern Albania, which were organized and totally controlled by Mafia. Precisely when Albanian President Sali Berisha undertook energetic actions to place before responsibility the people involved in the organization of these schemes, criminal circles organized an armed rebellion to topple the democracy in Albania."

    Further on in his declaration before the deputies of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Dr Otto Habsburg said:

    "It cannot be in the interest of Europe that Albanian former communists, who suppressed the country mercilessly for some successive years, to carry Albania to a new slavery again."

    At the end of his declaration. Mr Habsburg said that "Criticism towards Albanian President Sali Berisha do not contribute to the stabilization of Albania but on the contrary, they have a directly negative impact on the spread of anarchy and chaos in Albania." ssh/jz/xh/k

    [07] REPORT OF ALBANIA'S INTERIOR MINISTRY SPOKESMAN

    TIRANA, MARCH 17 (ATA) - The spokesman of the Interior Ministry said that from the information by police commissariats throughout the country, until 12 o'clock today, there are handed in 2 064 Kallashnikov machine guns, 282 different machine guns, 22 pistols, 1 242 semiautomatic rifles, 195 various rifles, 203 light machine guns, 76 heavy machine guns, 65 grenades, 3.9 million of various cartridges, 5 artillery mortars and 1 371 hand grenades.

    In the mean time, police have made nonstop patrolling.

    Upon order of the Interior Minister, every member of the patrolling group will be in uniform, or at least in the group must be ppeople in uniforms.

    The Interior Ministry appeals to all the citizens who possess arms and ammunition to surrender them in the nearest police commissariats and police stations.

    The Interior Ministry and all police commissariats have put at the disposal of citizens some telephone numbers, which are made public on the Radio and Television. Through them the citizens may inform police bodies, can make requests or complaints. ssh/pas/xh/k

    [08] BASHKIM DRIZA LEAVES ALBANIA ON THE BOARD OF AN AMERICAN HELICOPTER

    TIRANE, MARCH 17 (ATA) - According to a source from the family relatives of Bashkim Driza, president of the former foundation scheme Populli, Driza has left on the board of an American helicopter among scores of other nationals in the context of the U.S. operations for the evacuation of their citizens. ake/xh/k

    [09] NORMAL LIFE RESTORED IN ELBASAN

    ELBASAN, MARCH 17 (ATA) - By Pellumb Zekthi: Today is the second day during which no fire of arms was heard in the city of Elbasan.

    The local government is functioning normally today in all its structures despite the damages caused in institutions and schools and it is taking measures to eliminate the damage.

    In the mean time, an emergency meeting of the municipal was held last night to coordinate the work with the civic committee for democracy and to avoid party spirit in the work for the normalization of the economic and social life in the city.

    Sources from the police commissariat say they are working to collect the arms looted by people while the situation is under the control by the forces of public order. ake/kei/xh/k
