  • [01] SPA LEADER FATOS NANO GIVES A NEWS CONFERENCE

TIRANE, MARCH 17 (ATA) - By Agim Baci: The chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania, Fatos Nano, said in a news conference today in the SP headquarters, that he supported the Government of National Reconciliation and asked the Albanians to give a broad backup to this government.

"I support the Government of National Reconciliation and ask all the Albanian people to support the work of this government," said Nano, adding that the surrendering of arms recently looted from arms depots was an indispensability.

The former Premier Fatos Nano, 45, jailed in 1993 under charges of the abuse of office and pardoned last Sunday by a presidential decree, asked President Berisha to meet the request made to him to leave the post.

"SP does not intend to deal with this problem, because it is not a problem for the parties but a problem only for Berisha to solve. In fact this is something which the people are demanding," said Nano.

Nano hailed the support of the international community and appealed that its assistance for Albania should keep going.

"I hail and accept the factor of the all-sided assistance by the international community, but also Europe should understand that it has to do with a civilized people," said Nano. ake/kei/xh/k

[03] SITUATION IN BURREL GOING TOWARDS NORMALIZATION

BURREL, MARCH 17 (ATA) - By Hysen Ruspi: After the recent events when arms depots in several military units, state institutions and warehouses were stormed and looted, the situation in the district of Mat, North of Albania, is going towards normalization.

Sources of the hospital say that so far four people were killed and 40 were wounded as a result of the uncontrolled arms fire.

The situation in the town of Burrel was calm today. There were sporadic fire of arms in the suburbs and in nearby villages. Many private traders resumed their work in service of the population. The water and electric supply systems have worked normally.

The civic salvation committee has appealed to the people to surrender arms, to say "no" to violence and to restore tranquillity in their town.

Today the civic salvation committee held a peaceful rally in the center of Burrel with the participation of hundreds of local people. ake/kei/xh/k

[04] ALBANIAN DEFENCE MINISTER MEETS WITH MILITARY ATTACHE OF ITALY IN TIRANE

TIRANE, MARCH 17 (ATA) - In a meeting Monday with the military attache of Italy, Colonel Russo, in Tirana, the Albanian Defence Minister Shaqir Vukaj thanked Italy in the name of the Government of the National Reconciliation for the concrete assistance it is offering to Albania "in these grave moments."

Vukaj laid the need for a rather urgent assistance for the Albanian Army and stressed that Albanian military experts are working and will present the demands for an urgent aid.

Mr Russo expressed Italy's readiness to realise programs of assistance.

"In this regard we are working on concrete programs so that this difficult situation be overcome," he said.

Mr Russo added that it was indispensable that the situation and the demands be well defined so that they could see what kind of emergent and efficient assistance Albania needs.

He underlined the indispensability for the sea ports and airports of the country to be secured for the realization of Italy's assistance programs for Albania and the Albanian Army.

"The more you request in this grave situation, the more we will help you," said Russo. ake/kei/xh/k
