[01] PEACE MESSAGE TO MUSHERREF
Turkish State Minister Mehmet Kececiler, who is in
Pakistan to attend the "Independence Day" ceremonies and the
inauguration of Chasma Irrigation Channel, was received by Head of State
Pervez Musherref in Islamabad yesterday. The channel is built by the Turkish
Company TEKSER. Kececiler said he conveyed Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit's
message wishing peace and stability for both countries to Musherref. He
stated that Musherref invited President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Ecevit to

[02] ISRAEL AND TURKEY STILL IN TANK NEGOTIATIONS
Israel's Ha'aretz newspaper stated that negotiations for
the modernization of the Turkish Army's M-60 A3 battle tanks were underway.
Talks have reached the final stages, and negotiations for the modernization
of 900 Turkish tanks are expected to be finalized by the end of August.
Currently, both sides are working to reach an agreement on costs. Israel
said the project will cost around $350 million for the modernization of 170
tanks, but Turkey said that the entire project would cost between $700
million and $1 billion. /Turkish News/
[03] JORDANIAN UNDERSECRETARY TO VISIT TURKEY
Jordanian Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Ministry
Shahir Bak will pay a 3-day official visit to Turkey. According to a
statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bak will co-chair
inter-delegation meetings together with the Undersecretary of the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs Faruk Logoglu during his visit. /Cumhuriyet/
[04] WASHINGTON AND LONDON ON THE SECOND BORDER GATE BETWEEN
IRAQ AND TURKEY
The plans to open a new border gate between Turkey and
Iraq worried Washington and London. While the US officially expressed its
apprehension, the UK, on the other hand, said opening up a new gate would
require approval of draft resolution 66 by the UN Sanctions Committee. The
second border gate has been requested by Turkey in order to decrease the
intensive traffic at Habur. /Milliyet/
[05] AGREEMENT OF PEACE SIGNED IN SKOPJE
Officials from the Macedonian, Albanian and Macedonian
parties have signed peace agreement in the capital city of Skopje yesterday.
The agreement aims to finish the clashes in Macedonia, which have been going
on for six years, and opens a way for the NATO soldiers to enter this
country to disarm the Albanian militants. The Secretary General of NATO,
George Robertson, the European Union's Common Defense and Foreign Policy
High-level Representative, Javier Solana, the French mediator, Francois
Leotar, and the American representative, James Pardew, have participated in
the signing ceremony, which was led by the State Minister Boris Traykovski.
The agreement disarms the Albanian militants and extends the Albanian
minority's rights in education, language, business and in other fields.
Furthermore, a Turkish military unit of 150 soldiers, who will be dispatched
from Bosnia, will also take place in the NATO power of 3,500 people.

[06] TUPRAS' PERFORMANCE BETTER THAN PLANNED
State Oil Refinery Tupras Executive Board Chairman
Husamettin Danis said that the company had put in a better performance in
the first six months of this year. Danis said in a written statement that
Tupras had earned TL 194.2 trillion gross profits in the first half of this
year, and the company had exceeded its targets of 'net profits, net sales
and sales' despite the economic crisis. /Turkish News/
[07] FINANCIAL TIMES: "GET RID OF SLOW BUREAUCRATIC
PROCESSES"
The Financial Times stated in an article titled
"Call on Turkey to End Bureaucracy" which was published yesterday
that The World Bank called on the Turkish government to dispose of slow
bureaucratic processes. According to the Financial Times, the World Bank
argued in a report on Turkey that if Turkey could not end red tape, she
would not be able to compete with her rivals either in domestic or

[08] DERVIS MEETS WITH ACADEMICIANS
The Minister of State responsible for Economy, Kemal
Dervis and Former Chief Economist of the World Bank, Joseph Stiglitz, met
with academicians in the Bilgi University, Istanbul. After a briefing on the
on-going economic program, Dervis answered questions from the academicians
and listened to their comments. Dervis said that they were exerting great
effort to deduce the interest rates and foreign exchange rates. Meanwhile,
Stiglitz, who wrote an article criticizing IMF policies, also expressed his

[09] TOBB MEETINGS
Representatives from automotive and iron-steel sectors
are expected to attend the meetings being held by the Turkish Union of
Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) to discuss the problems of the
manufacturing industry on Wednesday. Minister of State Kemal Dervis,
Minister of State Tunca Toskay, Minister of Finance Sumer Oral and Minister
of Industry and Commerce Ahmet Kenan Tanrikulu will join the meetings, which
will be opened by TOBB Executive Council Chairman Rifat Hisarciklioglu.

[10] JAPAN TO SPONSOR AKYATAN BIRD PRESERVE FOR TOURISM
Cukurova's largest lagoon and an important nesting area
for water birds, the Akyatan bird preserve, will be opened to international
tourism with Japan's financial support. Adana Tourism Director Zeki Yilmaz
mentioned a lack of observation towers in the preserve, and added,
""We will open the bird preserve to international tourism."
"We need $200,000 to realize our project, and therefore, financial
support negotiations with the Japanese government are being conducted."

Architect Ahmet Ertug's photographs of Hagia Eirene and
Kariye museums will be displayed in Paris between August 19th and September
4th. Minister of Culture Istemihan Talay will open the exhibition.
