[01] JUSTICE AND PROGRESS PARTY FINALLY LAUNCHED
The party that the "reformists," the group that broke away from the banned Virtue Party (FP), have been working to establish, was finally launched on Tuesday in Ankara under the name of the" Justice and Progress Party "(AKP).The party banner is a lit light bulb with its lights rays depicted by seven lines around it. The party was launched with the leader of the movement, former Istanbul Mayor Recep Tayyip Erdogan, listed among the founding members. An AKP delegation of five presented the party's foundation notice to the Interior Ministry Secretary-General Huseyin Aksoy. /Turkish News/
[02] FIRST TRANSFER TO AKP
An independent deputy from Sanliurfa, Zulfikar Izol transfered to the Justice and Progress Party (AKP) on the first day of its establishment. Reportedly, a number of parliamentarians are expected to join the AKP today. /Sabah/
[03] YILMAZ'S BREAKTHROUGH
Motherland (ANAP) Party leader and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz is preparing to make suggestions to the government partners so the urgent legal and constitutional arrangements can be made concerning the European Union, following the discussions over the "national security syndrome." Before the opening of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) for the constitutional amendments on September 17th, Yilmaz will persist on the making of the constitutional and legal changes so the obstacles before the freedom of thought and expression can be removed. Within this framework, information has been given that Yilmaz will request that the 13th and 14th articles of the Constitution, which organize the use and limits o the basic rights and freedoms," the 7th and 8th "articles of the Anti-Terror Law and the 312th article of the Turkish Penal Code should be debated by giving priority. /Cumhuriyet/
[04] STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
Turkey stated that she is not taking any backward step concerning the requests that are involved by the national interests concerning the European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP). In the written statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was pointed out that there had been some false news concerning the EPDS in the media. In the statement, the situation of Turkey was also explained in the light of the latest developments and it was added that during the meeting ,which was held between the Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, Second Chief of the General Staff, Yasar Buyukanit, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Cem, and the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Faruk Logoglu, the negotiations that will be held in the second period have been discussed and that there was no disagreement between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the General Staff. /Cumhuriyet/
[05] DEPPLER: "PROGRAM IS BEING CARRIED OUT WELL"
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) European Director Michael Deppler said the economic program carried out in Turkey is doing well .In his article issued in the Financial Times' edition yesterday, Deppler said the economic program has begun to yield positive results. Stressing that Turkey has been trying to overcome the high inflation rates, he emphasized that structional reforms in many areas including the banking sector were very appropriate. /Turkiye/
[06] FIRST STEP TAKEN IN TELEKOM SALE
The tender for the consultant company to get ready for the Turk Telekom's privatization was announced. 18 foreign companies were invited for the bidding to end by October 2001.
According to the Letter of Intent submitted to the IMF, the Turk Telekom is supposed to prepare for the privatization program which should be approved by the IMF by the end of this year. /Turkiye/
[07] DERVIS MEETS CAKAN
The Minister of State for Economy Kemal Dervis met with the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Zeki Cakan yesterday. During the meeting a compromise was reached on the completion of 29 projects by the end of 2002 to prevent an energy shortage in Turkey. The Treasury will guarantee these projects. /Milliyet/
[08] MENDRES TEXTILE PREPARES FOR SECOND IPO
A promotion meeting for the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of textile producer Mendres Tekstil Sanayi and Ticaret A.S of Akca Holding was held in Istanbul yesterday. The IPO will be held so as to raise Menderes' paid-in capital to TL 25 trillion between Aug. 15 and Aug. 17 under the supervision of the consortium from Global Securities. The State Minister Yilmaz Karakoyunlu addressed the meeting saying the regulations aimed for improving access to capital markets have been around for 35 to 40 years. He said the government also made very important decisions in the second and third five-year development plans and the privatization process of the public sector should be completed. /Turkish News/
[09] PRIVATIZATION INCREASES IN TURKEY
Incomes earned from the privatization have decreased by 29.48% when compared to the year before and reduced to 100 billion 63 million US dollars in the year 2000 in the world. However, there has been an increase of 7.036% in Turkey. There has been an increase of 165.9% when compared to the year 1998 with a privatization of 2 billion 712 million US dollars. According to the data taken from the chapter about the privatization, which takes place in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) research titled Financial Market Trends, the facilities, which cost nearly 1 trillion US dollars and which are owned by the states, have been taken over by the private sector and the privatization has decreased by one third when compared to the year 1999. /Cumhuriyet/
[10] EXPORTS OF TRNC INCREASE
The problems and obstacles concerning the export of the goods, which are produced in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), begin to be overcome. The exports of the goods, which are of TRNC origin, are being developed in a limited manner with the decree that was prepared in accordance with the Trade Agreement, signed between Turkey and the TRNC in 1988. This decision, which is considered as a milestone in terms of the TRNC economy's challenges, was announced by the State Minister responsible for Economy and the Deputy Prime Minister Salih Cosar yesterday. Cosar said, "This decree will also help the solution of the problem of marketing." /Cumhuriyet/
[11] BILGE KAGAN'S TREASURE REVEALED
State Minister Abdulhaluk Mehmet Cay presented a collection of findings including valuable pieces which are considered to have belonged to Bilge Kagan's treasure, and were excavated within the "Turkish Monuments Project" being carried out in Mongolia. Pointing out that a team of 46 people, 35 of whom are Turkish the remaining 11 Mongolians, have been working on this project, Cay said that these findings may contribute to providing more data concerning Turkish arts and culture from some 1,300 years ago. /Turkish News/
[12] ATATURK AIRPORT IN WORLD LIST
According to a survey conducted by British EDR company and Turkish Alfa Research firm, among 46,853 travellers, Duty Free shops in the Ataturk Airport came fourth among the world airports concerning prices, varieties etc. categories. /Sabah/
[13] TOKYO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IN TURKEY
The world's one of the biggest orchestras, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, will give a series of concerts in Turkey to celebrate the 55th anniversary of its establishment. The orchestra will participate in the concerts, which aim to contribute to the victims of the earthquake occurred in August 1999, with a personnel of 100 people. The state artist, pianist Huseyin Sermet will be the art director of the first three concerts, which will be organized by Bogazici University and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. The opening ceremony will be on September 4th at Is Art and Cultural Center and the concerts will be held on September 6th at Ephesus Antique Theater and on September 8th at Aspendos Antique Theater. /Cumhuriyet/
[14] TURKEY IS PLEASED WITH THE PEACE AGREEMENT
Turkey is pleased with the fact that the Albanian and Macedonian political party leaders have signed a peace agreement to end the clashed, which have been going on for six months. If the NATO deploys 3,500 soldiers in the region to disarm the Albanian militants, then Turkey will participate in this power with her 150 soldiers. However, the clashes are underway in spite of the agreement reached the other day. In the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkey's pleasure derived from the peace agreement was pointed out and added, "Turkey wishes that the framework agreement will be a basis for the solution of the crisis in Macedonia and ensure a permanent stability in the country. Turkey also hopes that the armed attacks, which threaten the welfare and security of all the people living in Macedonia, including the Turkish minority, and which cause the losses of lives, will be left behind." /Cumhuriyet/
