  • [01] COUNTDOWN STARTED FOR REFORMISTS

    Reformists who have been working on forming a new party under the leadership of former Istanbul Mayor Recep Tayyip Erdogan will finalize the formation this week. Reformists are expected to file their petition to form the political party to the Interior Ministry this tomorrow, which is a necessary procedure for political parties to become official in Turkey. Erdogan will hold a press conference on Tuesday to publicize the party program and bylaws in Ankara. It is expected that the founding council made up of 75-80 people will also be present at the press conference. /Turkish Daily News/

    [02] A NOTE OF INFORMATION BY THE CHIEF OF THE GENERAL STAFF

    The Chief of the General Staff stated that the European Union (EU) wants to build its own security structure on the current possibilities of the Atlantic Alliance and to replace the NATO step by step. According to NTV channel, in a note prepared by Turkey concerning the European Policy of Security and Defense, it was stated, "The accession model cannot be accepted by Turkey before she takes place in the decision-making mechanism. The EU wishes to attain more rights beyond the gains of the Western European Union without making any sacrifices." Milliyet_

    [03] TURKEY HANDS A NOTE TO IRANIAN AMBASSADOR

    Turkey has handed a diplomatic note to Iranian Ambassador Huseyin Lavasani upon Iran's harassment of Azerbaijani research ships. Iranian war planes violated Azerbaijan's border and claimed that the "Aloz-Alov-Sharg" region, one of the richest oil and natural gas reserves of Azerbaijan, belonged to herself. Turkey's note explicitly stated that she always supported Azerbaijan reminding the regulations of international law and basic resolutions of the United Nations. Turkey believes that the relations between Iran and Azerbaijan concerning the Caspian Sea should be regulated in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. /Hurriyet/

    [04] KECECILER IN PAKISTAN

    Minister of State Mehmet Kececiler left for Islamabad yesterday at the invitation of the Pakistani government. Kececiler will attend Pakistan's independence celebrations tomorrow. /Turkiye/

    [05] HISARCIKLIOGLU: "WE TRUST IN THE GOVERNMENT"

    The Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) Chairman Rifat Hisarciklioglu said that they viewed the efforts of the government to revive the manufacturing industry as very sincere and added that they believed concrete steps would be taken next week. Hisarciklioglu said a council would be established next week, including representatives from manufacturing industry, financial sector, the Treasury, Banking Regulation and Supervision Board (BDDK), private banks and state banks. Pointing out that the preliminary aim of the council would be reviving the manufacturing sector, Hisarciklioglu said, "The relations between financial sector and manufacturing industry should be improved." /Cumhuriyet/

    [06] NATURAL GAS CONSUMPTION INCREASES

    According to the "World's Energy Report" prepared by BP including the figures for the year 2000, the oil consumption increased by 6.8% while the natural gas consumption swollen by 17.5% in Turkey with 31.5 million tons and 14.1 billion cubic meters respectively. The report also said an increase of 4.3% is observed in the total energy consumption in Turkey. /Turkiye/

    [07] AYGUN: "TURKEY CAN EARN FROM WATER SALE"

    Chairman of the Ankara Trade Chamber Sinan Aygun said Turkey can earn 4-5 billion dollars annually by exporting water. In a written statement, Aygun pointed out Turkey's waters pouring to the Mediterranean are 16 billion cubic meters annually, as opposed to the water shortage in the Mediterranean countries which is about 25 billion cubic meters. He also noted Turkey can earn not only from water sales but also from its transportation. /Turkiye/

    [08] THE AEGEAN AND MEDITERRANEAN TO BE LINKED

    The government contemplates a new project that would connect the Aegean and the Mediterranean by a tunnel there two areas are the most popular tourism regions in Turkey. Negotiations were held with five contractor companies before the bidding, which is planned to be put out in September, for the Gocek Tunnel that will be constructed in the Fethiye-Dalaman region. An investment of 30 trillion TL is envisaged for the construction of the tunnel, which will be one kilometer in length. /Milliyet/

    [09] DERVISH" RECEIVES SPECIAL YOUNG JURY PRIZE

    "Dervish" depicting the life of a "Mevlevi", received the Special Young Jury Prize at the 54th Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland. The movie, directed by Alberto Rondalli, narrates the life of Mevlevi sect sheikh Ahmet Nureddin who lived in a Ottoman town at the end of the 19th century. /Hurriyet/

    [10] DEUTSCHE BANK IS OPTIMISTIC

    The Deutsche Bank announced that the Turkish economy has achieved a balance in a short period of time. In its annual report, in which expectations and analyses concerning the Turkish economy take place the Deutsche Bank said that there are still some risks regarding the debts. In the report, it is also pointed out that the program carried out with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would yield positive results. It is further stated that positive developments were seen in the banking system and that there will be a decrease in the inflation rate in the following months. In the report, the inflation rate is estimated as 60% this year and 30% for the year 2002. /Milliyet/

    [11] LEADING TURKISH BRANDS EYE GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS

    Market leading brands in Turkey have joined powers under an association to seek a global competitive edge, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday. The United Brands Association has approximately 90 members including Damat-Tween, Park Bravo, Ipek Yol and Mavi Jeans, which have strong export experience. The association aims to achieve synergy by bringing together Turkey's powerful brands, executive director Suleyman Orakcioglu said. "We will make sure that these companies act together in trade and marketing. We will brief our members on global developments and advise them accordingly." /Turkish Daily News/

    [12] LETTER AWAITED FOR ATTACK COPTERS

    Talks between Turkey and the US continue over attack helicopters. The Defense Industry Undersecretariat is currently awaiting a letter of guarantee to manufacture and the export licenses for the mission computer system. /Turkish News/

    [13] YILMAZ : "TOURISM SECTOR WILL BE THE ECONOMY'S DYNAMO"

    Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz said that the tourism sector would contribute in a major way to overcome the current economic crisis and, furthermore, would be a resource for Turkey's brilliant future. Yilmaz participated in the opening ceremony of Konyaalti beach with Minister of Finance Sumer Oral, Minister of Labor and Social Security Yasar Okuyan and Motherland Party (ANAP) Deputy Chairman Erkan Mumcu. Yilmaz said, "Antalya is Turkey's most important tourism center. From January on, some 2.6 million tourists arrived in Antalya by air alone, and this is a 50 percent increase over last year's numbers." /Turkish News/

    [14] ECOLOGIC TOURISM CENTER ON KURE MOUNTAINS

    The Association of Saving Natural Life is opening an "Eco-tourism" center on Kure Mountains, declared as "natural park" in 1999, to widen the ecologic tourism. The Mountains include various natural wonders, such as Valla Canyon, Ilgarini Cave and Ilica Waterfall. The Ecologic Tourism center is scheduled to be opened next year. /Turkiye/

    [15] AVANOS POTS ANS PANS EUROPEANS' FAVORITE

    The pots and pans made in Avanos, Nevsehir, one of Turkey's art centers, have taken an important part in European markets. Europeans, who spend DM1,500 individually per year for the decoration of their houses and gardens, are widely using Avanos pots and pans for decoration. /Turkiye/

    [16] RUSSIAN TOURISTS PREFER TURKEY

    Turkey has become a holiday region, where the Russian people want to visit more than their country. According to the news published in the "Moskovski Komsomolets" daily, in a survey made among the 1,197 travel agencies in Moscow, Turkey has become the first country to spend the holiday. In the survey that was carried out on 16-22 July, Turkey gained a ratio of 36.76%. Turkey was followed by Spain with 22.89% and Russia has become the third. /Milliyet/

    [17] TOURISTS RUSH TO MUGLA

    Above 1 million tourists were reported to visit Mugla and its districts in the first seven months of this year. Authorities from the Ministry of Tourism stated that this number indicated a 30% increase compared to the same period last year. /Cumhuriyet/
