Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this
morning.
[01] TURKEY, ESTONIA SIGN AIRPORT ACCORDS
President Suleyman Demirel arrived in the Estonian capital of Tallinn
on Tuesday, as part of a three-nation tour of the former Soviet Baltic
States. Early Tuesday, Demirel ended a two-day visit to Lithuania by
addressing the Lithuanian Parliament. He flew into Tallinn from
Vilnus.
Estonian President Lennart Meri and his wife Hegle Meri greeted
Demirel at the Kadriorg Presidential Palace for talks. The two
leaders signed agreements on shipping and air transport that will
facilitate maritime trade and air travel between Turkey and
Estonia./Cumhuriyet/
[02] TURKEY WANTS TO RENEW 'OIL FOR FOOD' DEAL
Turkey's permanent representative to the United Nations Huseyin Celem
told the Anatolia news agency on Tuesday that Turkey was not against
the renewal of the six month 'oil for food' deal which allows Iraq to
sell oil and buy food and medicine worth $ 2 billion. Celem noted
that Turkey was suffering from the embargo on Iraq and was waiting for
measures which would lighten Turkish losses.
[03] TERRORISTS OPEN FIRE ON ERGANI POLICE
Terrorists opened fire late Monday night on the Ergani, Diyarbakir,
police housing area. One terrorist was killed and a police officer
wounded, the Anatolia news agency reported. Meanwhile another attack
occured at noon on Tuesday in Dikbogaz, a village in the Eruh district
of Siirt. Five villagers were killed and three were injured.
Operations are underway to capture the terrorists involved in the
attack.
[04] FIRST TURKISH BANK TO ISSUE BONDS OVERSEAS
The Osmanli Bank has issued bonds worth DM 150 million through the
Frankfurt Stock Exchange in cooperation with the UBS and Morgan Bank.
Osmanli Bank general director Ajlan Acar told the Anatolia news agency
in London that the bonds are issued for a three-year term and have an
interest rate of 8 %. Acar pointed out that the Osmanli Bank is the
first private bank to issue bonds in foreign bourses.
[05] CAUCASIAN AND CENTRAL ASIAN BANKS TO COOPERATE WITH TURKISH CENTRAL
BANK
The Central Bank of Turkey has started to look for cooperation
possibilities with the Central Asian and Caucasian countries' central
banks, the Anatolia news agency reported on Tuesday. Turkish
Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA) director Necati Utkan met
Central Bank head Gazi Ercel to discuss the issue.
[06] DENKTAS: "GREEK CYPRIOTS WANT TO CREATE PROBLEMS FOR TURKEY"
President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Rauf
Denktas said on Monday at a press conference in Istanbul that Greek
Cypriots had captured the title of the government of Cyprus by
cheating the world. They wanted to keep this title and aimed at
continuing the economic embargo on the Turkish side, Denktas calimed.
The president emphasized again that Cyprus was not a unitary state and
said that in no way could the Greek Cypriot side represent Turkish
Cypriots./All papers/
[07] KARADAYI OFF TO PARIS
Chief of General Staff, General Ismail Hakki Karadayi, set off for
Paris today as the guest of his French counterpart. While in Paris,
Karadayi will discuss Turkey's full membership in the Western European
Union (WEU). It is understood however, that Karadayi will be asked
about Turkey's domestic developments. Other matters on the agenda
include Turkey-France relations and the purchase of French-made

[08] MOSLEM-CHRISTIAN CONFERENCE
Turkey will be represented at a conference to develop ties between
Moslems and Christians at the Istanbul Marmara Hotel by Director of
the Turkish Arts and Culture Research Centre, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.
The conference will examine cultural, historical and academic aspects
of the relations between these two predominant groups and seek ways of
furthering both cooperation and understanding. /Hurriyet/
[09] TRADE WITH ARMENIA OPENING UP
Progress is reported in talks between Turkish and Armenian
businessmen. Chairman of the Trabzon Chambers of Trade and Industry,
Mazhar Afacan, said yesterday that Trabzon had a large role to play in
developing new trade ties with Armenia, now that the "door was being

[10] MITSOTAKIS IN ISTANBUL
Former Greek prime minister Constantin Mitsotakis is in Istanbul to
receive the 8th Abdi Ipekci Peace and Friendship Award. Noting that
although there still much to be done in the improvement of relations
between Turkey and Greece, Mitsotakis stressed that every step was
being taken to resolve issues. /All papers/
