    Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning.

    [01] HIGH LEVEL SEMINAR BRINGS TOGETHER EU AND NATO MEMBERS

    A high level seminar held in Belek, Antalya, over the weekend evaluated the expectations of potential candidates for membership from the forthcoming NATO and European Union summits. The seminar, entitled, "Integration Process within a Changing European Architecture", brought together representatives, observers and academics from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia. Chaired jointly by the Undersecretary for the Turkish Foreign Ministery, Onur Oymen, and his Polish counterpart Jan Borowski, the seminar stressed that enlargement of the EU would greatly increase the prosperity of each applicant country and thus contribute to peace and stability on the continent.

    [02] PRESIDENT DEMIREL EMBARKS ON BALTIC COUNTRIES VISIT

    President Suleyman Demirel on Monday began his trip to Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia and at a press conference at Esenboga Airport before his departure said that the agreements which he will sign with the Baltic countries will lead to improved bilateral ties. The President indicated that both the Baltic states and Turkey wanted to integrate with Europe, and during his visit he would exchange views on this.

    During Demirel's visit, Turkey and Lithuania will sign a free trade agreement, while with Estonia a free trade agreement and encouragement of investments protocol will be signed. Turkey and Latvia will sign a security and cooperation agreement. Turkey will also sign cooperation protocols with the Foreign Ministries of these three countries./Cumhuriyet/Hurriyet_

    [03] TURKISH PARLIAMENTARIANS VISIT ISRAEL

    A group of Turkish-parliamentarians is paying a visit to Israel at the invitation of the Israeli Foreign Ministry to study the local political situation and to increase opportunities for cooperation between Israel and Turkey. Turkish parliamentarians were received by the Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy and visited the Israeli Parliament (the Knesset) and met with their Israeli counterparts.

    [04] INDIA AND TURKEY TO IMPROVE ECONOMIC TIES

    Indian Ambassador R.M. Abhyankar noted Monday that Turkey and India share many common values, specifically democracy and secularism, the Anatolia news agency reported.

    Speaking during a visit to Gaziantep, Abhyankar expressed great pleasure to be in the province known for its dynamic trade and industry. The Indian Ambassador emphasized that India wanted to develop economic ties and friendly relations with Turkey and said that an Indian delegation would be making a first step in that direction during a forthcoming official visit to Turkey.

    [05] TALBOTT: "WASHINGTON SUPPORTS THE DEMOCRATIC ORDER IN TURKEY"

    U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott repeated on Monday that Washington was a great supporter of Turkish democracy and secularism. Talbott made these comments after meeting Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller and Undersecretary Onur Oymen in Ankara.

    He was in Ankara on a visit in connection with the OSCE "Minsk Group" which is trying to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh problem between Armenia and Azerbaijan. While in Ankara, Talbott was received by President Suleyman Demirel and had talks with Deputy Chief of General Staff, Gen. Cevik Bir.

    Following his visit to the deputy Chief of General Staff, Gen. Cevik Bir, Talbott voiced his administration's positive attitude regarding Turkey and the importance attached by Washington to this country./Cumhuriyet/Sabah_

    [06] ISTANBUL BRINGS SHIPPING INDUSTRY TOGETHER

    Istanbul, a major shipping center and city which unites two continents, is host to a comprehensive conference which will discuss issues confronting today's global shipping industry. The four-day Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) general meeting opened yesterday in Istanbul with more than 700 delegates from around the world./Hurriyet/

    [07] NEW CENTRE FOR TURKISH ENTREPRENEURS

    Minister for the economy in Westphalia, Wolfgang Clement yesterday officiated at the opening ceremonies for a new Centre for Turkish Entrepreneurs in Essen, Germany.

    Turkish workers in Germany can use the Centre to develop entreprenurial activities which will "improve the image of Turkish workers in Germany", said Centre chairman Faruk Sen at the opening. /Milliyet/

    [08] TURKISH FLAG IN SPACE

    The Turkish flag will be represented on a new space station being built over the next six years. Thirteen countries are sharing in the construction programme which will be finished by the year 2002. US astronaut Jim Reilly will take the flag out into space. The flag will be handed over to Reilly during a ceremony later this month. /Sabah/

    [09] TURKISH DAYS IN MOROCCO

    A Turkish export products fair called "Turkish Days in Morocco" will be held in the Casablanca province of Morocco between 11-14 September 1997. It is reported that this fair will help increase Turkish exports to Morocco. /Hurriyet/

    [10] ILO GENERAL COUNCIL BEGINS TODAY

    The 85th General Council of the International Labour Organization (ILO) began in Geneva today. It is reported that six different issues including Turkey's union rights and collective labour agreements, especially for civil servants, will be discussed by the Application Committee. /Cumhuriyet/

    [11] PKK MURDERS TRAVELERS

    Militants of the PKK terrorist organization, who stopped cars on the Siirt-Kurtalan highway and checked the identity cards of passengers, killed a father and his son. PKK terrorists set another car on fire, but the driver managed to escape. /Cumhuriyet/

    [12] FOCUS MAGAZINE DEVOTES WIDE COVERAGE TO TURKISH BUSINESSMEN

    Focus, a weekly German magazine, has devoted wide coverage in its latest issue to Turkish businessmen, who have made big investments in Germany. A six-page article said that Turks, who first came to Germany as employees, became employers. The article also furnished statistical information regarding the Turkish society in Germany. /Hurriyet/

    [13] NATO WOMEN MEET IN ISTANBUL

    Female representatives of the armies of NATO member-countries came together in Istanbul for the annual meeting of the NATO Women Soldiers Committee. In a speech at the opening ceremony, General Yildirim Turker praised women for their valuable contributions to the development of NATO adding that women had proved that they could assume successful roles not only within the family circle or in social spheres, but also in the army. Committee Chairman Marcelite Harris said that during the meeting the delegates would exchange information on developments and implementations concerning female soldiers in NATO countries. /Hurriyet/
