[01] HELICOPTER CRASHES IN NORTHERN IRAQ, KILLS 11 SOLDIERSA Turkish Army Couger helicopter crashed early Wednesday during a flight mission in northern Iraq's Zap region killing 11 military personnel, including eight officers. The press office of the General Staff's secretary-general said in its statement that the aircraft went down in mountainous terrain at 07:00 hours due to a technical failure./Sabah/[02] TURKEY, LATVIA SIGN COOPERATION ACCORDSTurkey and Latvia Wednesday signed accords on cooperation in shipping and security, and established a joint business council to encourage trade and investment between the two nations. President Suleyman Demirel and President Guntis Ulmanis signed the accords in the Latvian capital of Riga. The two presidents held private talks on bilateral issues, regional questions and Latvia's prospective membership in NATO and the European Union. The agreements will ease maritime trade between the two states and encourage cooperation to fight organized crime, terrorism and drug trafficking.Demirel on Wednesday also toured Riga's Fine Arts Museum, laid a wreath at the Latvian Freedom Monument and visited the municipality, addressing a gathering of Latvian and Turkish businessmen. On Thursday he will meet Latvian Prime Minister Andris Skele, Parliamentary Speaker Alfreds Cepanis and Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee members before meeting again with President Ulmanis and holding a news conference before flying back to Turkey./Cumhuriyet/ [03] AMERICAN ASTRONAUT REILLY TO CARRY TURKISH FLAG INTO SPACEAmerican astronaut James Reilly on Wednesday received a small Turkish flag from Parliament Speaker Mustafa Kalemli at a ceremony where Reilly kissed the flag and touched it to his forehead. The astronaut plans to carry the Turkish flag into space. At the ceremony, Kalemli said he would later keep the flag in the Parliament museum. Reilly said he and all the crew would be honored to take the Turkish flag into space./Cumhuriyet/[04] D-8 SUMMIT SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 15Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman Sermet Atacanli told reporters on Wednesday said that the D-8 summit scheduled for June 15 in Istanbul would be an important step in the establishment of this new organization. Atacanli added that before the summit the foreign ministers of the D-8 countries would meet to discuss several projects.Regarding the Greek and Turkish 'wise men' meeting, Atacanli said that the Netherlands had invited the Greek and Turkish representatives to a meeting on May 26 and that Turkey has accepted the invitation but Greece had not. The Netherlands will consider the reports and evaluate the current situation, Atacanli said./Cumhuriyet/ [05] ANKARA SAYS DIFFICULTIES WITH IRAN CONTINUEForeign Ministry spokesman Sermet Atacanli said on Wednesday at the weekly press conference that friction with Iran regarding the Turkish Armed Forces' ongoing operation in northern Iraq was continuing.Ankara told Tehran that Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) members were escaping to Iran and asked that they take the necessary measures./All papers/ [06] KINKEL: "WE DO NOT HAVE XENOPHOBIA"German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel said that xenophobia should never emerge in Germany again and added that the German people were ashamed of these kinds of incidents. In a statement to the BZ newspaper published in Berlin, Kinkel noted that during his visits to American and South American countries, where Jewish people live, and to Poland, he was subjected to questions regarding extremely rightist attacks in Germany. He said: "I believe that we should take every legal measure against these kinds of attacks". /Sabah/[07] FIRE IN GERMANY: ONE TURK DEAD, 53 INJUREDDuring a fire at a building where refugees live in the Friedrichshafen district of Germany, one Turk died and 53 other people, including 13 Turks, were injured yesterday. Friedrichshafen Prosecutor George Niederer said: "To date, we have not been able to find any clue regarding the incident. However investigation is continuing". /Sabah/[08] THY FLIGHTS TO BUDAPEST STARTTurkish Airlines (THY) will start scheduled Istanbul-Budapest flights tomorrow. Flights will go direct to the Hungarian capital, Budapest, and vice versa on Monday, Wednesday and Friday with RJ-70 or RJ-100 passenger planes. /Hurriyet/[09] MILLIYET PEACE AWARDThe traditional Milliyet Abdi Ipekci Peace and Friendship awards were presented with a ceremony yesterday. During the ceremony, owner of Milliyet newspaper, Aydin Dogan and Greek former Prime Minister Konstantin Mitsotakis delivered speeches and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Turkish President Suleyman Demirel and Chairman of the Motherland Party (ANAP) Mesut Yilmaz sent congratulatory messages to the festival.Mitsotakis was awarded with the major Peace and Friendship Award. He said that he had exerted every effort for peaceful and friendly Turco-Greek relations and added that problems should be solved through dialogue. In his message, Annan expressed the importance of strengthening Turco-Greek relations. He stated that he would make initiatives in the forthcoming months for a lasting solution in Cyprus and added that he would invite the two leaders on the island to New York to start a new process. He also appreciated the recent peace efforts of the Greek and Turkish governments. Further, President Demirel said in his message that the eighth Abdi Ipekci Friendship and Peace Award had made an important contribution to Turco-Greek friendship. /Milliyet-Sabah/ [10] MILITARY OPERATION IN NORTHERN IRAQReports from northern Iraq say that the Turkish military forces operation there against terrorist PKK camps in the region has been a success. According to military spokesmen, the PKK has been eradicated and PKK camps have been razed to the ground.Leader of the Kurdish Iraq Kurdistan Democrat Party (IKDP), Mesut Barzani also claims that the PKK has been wiped out. As the military operation in northern Iraq winds up, the PKK organization is still very much under debate in other parts of the world. Turkey, the US and Israel are going to join forces in blocking PKK attacks against civilian targets. Over in Europe PKK terror will be discussed at the up-coming EU European Council meeting in Prague where participants from forty countries will examine among other things the question of international terror. Turkey will be represented at the meeting by Minister for Justice Sevket Kazan who will likely present a comprehensive dossier on the PKK to the meeting. /All papers/ [11] BRAINY TURKS SHOULD APPLY NOWClever young Turks over the age of eighteen should apply now if they think they could do well in the 6th annual intelligence championships to be held this year in Croatia in September.Four very bright young people are needed to represent Turkey in the competitions. Applications should be in by June 15. /Cumhuriyet/ [12] HOLBROOK TAKES THE CYPRUS ISSUE IN HANDUS diplomat Richard Holbrook has been appointed US President Bill Clinton's special representative for Cyprus. The US State Department is expected to make an official statement regarding the appointment. Holbrook mediated the end of the civil war in Bosnia and is known as one of the architects of the Dayton agreements that officially put an end to the war in the Balkans. /Sabah/[13] EUROPEAN-TURKISH POLITICIANS MEET IN ESENYURTTurkish politicians from the European countries will come together in Esenyurt, Istanbul, for a symposium organized by the Esenyurt municipality. During the three-day symposium, Turkish representatives serving in parliaments of the European countries or in city municipalities in Europe will come together to exchange views about recent developments in Turkey and the world, and to discuss common problems encountered by Turks living abroad. /Sabah/[14] TANKER CRASHA tanker exploded in the Istanbul, Tuzla shipyard yesterday. Four people were killed and one was injured. This is the second accident in the Tuzla shipyard this year.
