[01] Hungarian president Arpad Goncz is visiting Romania
The president of Hungary, Arpad Goncz, started on Sunday a three-day
official visit to Romania, which he qualified as "historic". After talks
with his Romanian counterpart Emil Constantinescu, he declared that Hungary
does its best for Romania to accede to NATO in the first wave as well as to
the EU. He said that an atmosphere of confidence should reign between the
two countries, a direction in which most important steps have been already
made. The president of Hungary pointed out that a large part of the
provisions of the framework political treaty have been implemented or their
implementation is underway. "I invited the president of Romania to visit
Hungary with love and friendship", Arpad Goncz said. In his turn, president
Constantinescu disclosed the concrete elements of the talks: the building
of a Bucharest-Budapest highway, more judicious utilization of the Danube
and of joint railway network, the removal of bureaucratic barriers in front
of Romanian and Hungarian busonessmen, the cooperation in fight against
organized crime, the development of university and cultural relations on
basis of confidence. Arpad Goncz also met Romanian prime minister Victor
Ciorbea who estimated that there are now unprecedented opportunities for
the development of Romanian-Hungarian relations. Victor Ciorbea announced
that the Romanian currency, the Leu, will become convertible quite soon.
The president of Hungary also participated in the International Consumer
Goods Fair within a Romanian-Hungarian Business Forum. A series of accords
have been concluded on the occasion between the Chambers of Commerce and
Industry of the two countries and between Romanian and Hungarian banks.
