[01] Romania is expecting an important decision of Holland
In the coming days, Holland is expected to make its final decision on
whether to back Romania's candidacy to NATO. The statement was made in the
Hague on Tuesday by the Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok at the end of the
talks with his Romanian counterpart, Victor Ciorbea. Holland doesn't oppose
Romania's integration in NATO, Prime Minister Kok said. He highlighted this
country's role in ensuring stability and security in the region, thanks to
its good relations with Hungary, Ukraine and other neighbouring states. The
Dutch Prime Minister also said that the new Romanian government has made
possible the reconciliation between the Hungarian minority and the Romanian
majority. RRI
[02] Romania joins CEFTA
Romania's Senate ratified Romania's adhesion to the Central European Free
Trade Accord, signed in Bucharest on April 12-th 1997. Romania's joining of
CEFTA represents an important process of integration into the European
economic structures, meant to bring Romania closer to the other five states
associated to the EU. The previsions of the accord refer to the trade with
industrial products and partially to the farming produce, finally aimed at
creating a free trade area in Central Europe. RRI
[03] The Romanian Intelligence Service has a new leader
The joint parliamentary comittee monitoring the Romanian Intelligence
Service endorsed on Tuesday Costin Georgescu, deputy of the National
Liberal Party, as the new chief of the Service. Costin Georgescu, aged 55,
has been a close collaborator of President Emil Constantinescu since 1992.
Five years ago he was the manager of Mr. Constantinescu's election
campaign. Costin Georgescu is a civil engineer. His nomination comes after
the ex-leader of the Service, Virgil Magureanu, tendered his resignation on
April 24-th. Magureanu takes credit for reorganising the most important of
the Romanian secret services. Over the years, the media associated his name
to a number of rows in connection with alleged illegal practices. He was
accused of tapping the telephones of some journalists and politicians and
of missmanagging the files of the former communist Securitate. In April,
when he submitted his resignation, Mr. Magureanu made public his plans to
go into politics without mentionning any political party he would like to
join. RRI
[04] Rehabilitation of the victims of communism in Romania
The Supreme Court of Justice in Bucharest has rehabilitated 21 great
Romanian intellectuals. All 21 were accused by the communists of plotting
against the social order and of national treason, and were sentenced, on
May 1-st 1960, to 25 years of hard labour and 7 years detention in a
correctional jail. All their properties and assets were confiscated. These
intellectuals were accused of organizing, between 1945 and 1958, literary
sessions during which they made "defamatory statements against the
communist regime". They were also accused of having multiplied and spread
writings with counter-revolutionary caracter, written by Emil Cioran and
Constantin Noica. RRI
