[01] Bilateral Relations and Regional Cooperation in the Focus of Attention
of the Visit Paid by the Romanian Foreign Minister, Adrian Severin, to
Croatia.
Zagreb - The head of Romanian diplomacy, Adrian Severin, met on Monday in
Zagreb, Croatia, with the president, Franjo Tudjman, with premier Zlatko
Matesa, and with the foreign minister, mate Granic. The romanian side
expressd the wish of increasing bilateral economic exchanges. The officials
in Zagreb said thet Croatia is interested in a more active presence of
Romanian companies in the process of reconstruction of the former Mugoslav
area. Bucharest and Zagreb are also seeking ways of mutual support in the
process of integration into the European Union and NATO. Also tackled was
the Romanian-Croat-Hungarian three side protocol envisagining a complex
development of the danube's potential. Another topic of discussions was the
protection of linguistic, religious and cultural identity of the Romanian
comunity in Croatia and of the Croats in Romania. The Romanian foreign
minister also met representatives of the Romanian communities in Croatia.
[02] Costin Georgescu Nominated for the Post of Director of the Romanian
Intelligence Service.
Bucharest - Romania's president, Emil Constantinescu, on Monday sent to
spekers of the two chambers of parliament the proposal for the nomination
of the national liberal party MP, Costin Georgescu, in the post of director
of the Romanian Intelligence Service. The Parliamentary commision for the
control of the RIS's activity, as well as the joint meeting on Wednesday of
the standing bureaus of the two chambers are to debate the proposal. This
proposal, which meets tMe agreement of the entire governmental body, was
taken after the consultations held by the head of statewith the leaders of
the parliamentary parties. In a declaration to our radio station, Costin
Georgescu said that he would try to track down all leaks of information
from the RIS. He also said that he had no link whatever with the former
political police before 1989, or with any other secret services. His
nomination comes after the resignation, on April the 24th, of the former
RIS director, Virgil Magureanu.
[03] Romania's President, Emil Constantinescu, Has Promulgated the Law on
the Privatization of Banking Commercial Companies.
Bucharest - Romania's president, Emil Constantinescu, has promulgated the
law on the privatization of banking commercial companies, where the state
has shares. This is the first important law in the package of about 80 laws
promised by the executive in Bucharest. This package is necessary to uphold
the reform in Romania. Among other things, the law on the privatization of
banks stipulates that no legal Romanian or foreign entity can aquire the
right of ownership over a numMer of stocks which amount to more than 20 per
cent of the capital of a banking company, with the exception of reputed
financial and banking institutions. The privatization of banks will be done
through the increase of capital, the sale of stocks held by the Romanian
state or through the mix of the former two methods. However, the state will
have a capital quota or a golden share. The drawing up of this law was done
in keeping with measures taken by other European countries in transition
and with practices in western Europe, with a view to harmonizing Romanian
legislation with that of the European Union.
[04] Meeting in Bucharest Between the Members of EURISK Foundation And a
Delegation of the US War College
Bucharest - The Euro-Atlantic centre in Bucharest on Monday hosted a
meeting between the members of the EURISK foundation and a delegation of
the US war college, headed by doctor Sarah Botsai. On the delegation are
students of the US state and defence departaments, high-ranking officers
from the US air force ande navy. The president of EURISK fundation, doctor
Liviu Muresan, preMented Romania's geo-political and geo-strategic
situation and this country's arguments for admission into NATO. The members
of the american delegation mainly tackled the opportunities which Romania
offers to the US from the economic point of view, as well as the freedon of
the Romanian press.
[05] The Visit in Romania of a Delegation of American Businessmen
Bucharest - "Romania is attractive from the investments point of view" the
mayor of Hammond, Indiana, Duane Dedelow declared on Monday in Bucharest
after his meeting with the president of the Chamber of Commerce and
Industry of romania, George Cojocaru. The mayor of Hammond is a member of a
delegation of American businessmen interested mainly in investing in the
Romanian iron and steel industry. Their agenda also including in the next
few days a visit to the Iron and Steel plant of Galati, in eastern Romania.
