[01] The Romanian Senate maintained a previous decision to strip Senator
C.V. Tudor, leader of the Greater Romania Party, of parliamentary immunity
The representatives of the ruling coalition in the Romanian Senate
cancelled the debate scheduled for Thursday on the request to strip Greater
Romania Party leader C.V. Tudor of parliamentary immunity. In exchange, the
ruling coalition decided through a simple vote that the suspension of the
immunity, approved by the former Senate, would remain in force until the
sMttlement of the case that had called for immunity cancelation. Senator
C.V. Tudor is sued for libel by several politicians and men of culture.
During the voting, the opposition leaders in the Senate gave a press
conference announcing their withdrawal from voting due to serious
violations of the Constitution and of the Senate regulations. C.V. Tudor
said he would appeal against Thursday's decision by the Romanian Senate in
the Constitutional Court. RRI-RADOR, March 14.
[02] Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea returned from his visit to
Hungary.
Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea returned in Bucharest on Thursday
from a two-day visit to Hungary. In Budapest, the Prime Minister had talks
with President Arpad Goncz, with Prime Minister Gyula Horn, with
businessmen and with representatives of the Romanian minority in Hungary.
Back in Bucharest, Victor Ciorbea stated on Romanian Television that the
main success of his visit was the conclusion of several agreements seeking
the pMomotion of an active partnership between the two countries in all
areas. The Romanian Prime Minister also stated that he had been given
assurances by leaders in Budapest that they would back the concurrent
admission of Hungary and Romania in NATO in the first wave. RRI-RADOR,

[03] Starting this week, the Romanian central bank no longer sets a
reference exchange rate.
Starting this week the Romanian commercial banks are setting their own

National Bank will present a weekly reference rate, applicable to
calculations of customs duties. For the period between March 10 and 16,
that rate is 7,744 lei for one US dollar. The private exchange offices will
buy the dollar for 6,500 lei to 7,500 lei, and will sell it for 7,200 to 8,

the success of the reform
The speaker of the Romanian Senate, Petre RMman, expressed confidence in
the success of the reform and austerity policy promoted by the present
Government in Romania, estimating that the motivation of that policy is
understood by most of Romanians. In a statement for France Presse, he
mentioned the agreements with trade unions on freezing wages in public
corporations and in state-controlled companies. The implementation of the
reform, the restructuring of certain industries - that is the only path
leading to progress, Petre Roman said. RRI-RADOR, March 14.
