[01] Hungary and Romania stand a good chance to become NATO members,
Hungarian Foreign Ministry state secretary Ferencz Szomogy said
Hungary and Romania stand a good chance to become NATO members in the very
first wave of the enlargement process, state secretary Ferencz Szomogy of
the Hungarian Foreign Ministry said at a press conference he held jointly
with his Romanian counterpart Lazar Comanescu, in Budapest. Mr Szomogy also
said that Hungary was interested that its members as well as other
countries in Eastern Europe integrate into the Euro-Atlantic organizations.
The Hungarian official added that he would hail these countries accession
to NATO and the European Union, in case they should comply with the
criteria required. In his turn, Romanian state secretary Lazar Comanescu
said that Romania, the same as Hungary, was striving to make its
contribution in the process of building security and stability in the
Europe of the future. RRI-RADOR, February 28.
[02] The Romanian Senate passed a draft law banning chemical weapons
On Thursday, the Romanian Senate passed a draft law on implementing the
Convention banning the development, manufacture, storing and use of
chemical weapons. This law obliges all of the companies that produce,
process, import and export chemicals to draft the initial declarations and
forward them to the National Agency for Control of Strategic Exports and
Banning Chemical Weapons by April 29, 1997, the date when the Convention
comes into force. The Convention was adopted by the Geneva Conference on
Disarmament on September 3, 1992, after 12 years of negociations. So far it
has been signed by 160 states, including Romania, which ratified it in
December 1994. RRI-RADOR, February 28.
[03] The head of Romanian Police General Inspectorate was dismissed
The head of the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police Forces,
brigadeer general Costica Voicu, was dismissed following a proposal by
interior minister Gavril Dejeu. The successor of brigadeer general Voicu
will be colonel Pavel Abraham, former head of the Criminal Investigations
Division of the General Police Inspectorate. The spokesman for the Romanian
Government said this change was motivated by the need to have a better
organization and functioning of the Interior Ministry. RRI-RADOR, February

[04] The Romanian Government approved a bill granting compensations for
underpriviledged people
On Thursday, the Romanian Government approved a draft law granting monthly
compensations to those underpriviledged social categories whose situation
had worsened after the liberalization of prices for bread and bakery
products. In the past month, the price of bread has grown more than twice.
The law will benefit the retirees, the jobless and the underpaid employees.

[05] Exhibition of the Romanian Foundation for the Development of Civil
Society
The Romanian Foundation for the Development of the Civil Society has
organized in Bucharest an exhibition entitled "Foundations and Associations
in Romania". Attending are over 120 NGOs. Up to March 1, these NGOs will
present their action programmes in 12 fields, among which human rights,
civic education, health care and environment. Also attending the opening of
the exhibition was president Emil Constantinescu who said that the
thousands of NGOs that had been set up in Romania proved that this country
really promoted a genuine diversity of opinions and interests. RRI-RADOR,

[06] The weather
The weather is expected to become cold, especially in the northern and
eastern parts of Romania. The highs of the day will range between 0 and 8
Centigrade. A cloudy and cold day in Bucharest, also, with highs up to 5
