[01] The president of the European Christian Democratic Union visits
Romania
In a visit to Romania, the president of the European Christian Democratic
Union, Vim Van Velzen, said he wanted to help the government coallition in
Romania both for the implementation of the reforn and for the creation of a
favorable image of Romania in Western Europe. Reffering to the inclusion of
the Ethnic Hungarians Democratic Union in the government, Wim Van Velzen
said that Romania is an example for the other countries in Central and
Eastern Europe as to working with the ethnic minorities. Mr. van Velzen
said that as to the possibility of Romania and other central and East
European contries joining NATO, Russia should be consulted. He pointed to
the availability of the Kremlin for dialogue, and expressed the hope that
in the end an understanding will be reached as to NATO's expansion. RRI-

[02] Romania and Hungary back each other in their accession to NATO
Romania and Hungary back each other so that their accession to NATO should
be done simultaneously, the president of the European integration
commission of the Hungary's parliament, Victor Orban, said after his
meetings with the Romanian foreign minister Adrian Severin, and with the
vice-speaker of Romania's Senate, Cristian Dumitrescu. The Hungarian
parliamentarian stressed that in his country, both the opposition and the
government coallition back the Romanian-Hungarian partnership. On the other
hand, a new round of Romanian-Hungarian consultations for the finalization
of documents concerning the relaunching of the partnership between the
twocontries are taking place in Budapest. RRI-RADOR, February 25, 1997.
[03] New foreign investors for Romania
The president of the Administration board of the German Wintershall AG
corporation, Herbert Dethardino was received by Romania's president Emil
Constantinescu. The German corporation wants to invest in Romania in the
transport and storing of natural gas, since a pipe-line will be built
between Ukraine and the northwestern Romanian town of Satu Mare and in te
building of underground store-rooms near Bucharest and the town of Roman,
eastern Romania. The total sum will be over 100 million dollars. RRI-RADOR,

[04] Draft reforms in Romania's system of justice
The Romanian minister of justice, Valeriu Stoica, has announced draft
reforms. Among the laws that will suffer essential changes are the Civil
Code, the Penal Code, and the law on judicial organization. The Ministry of
Justice will soon forward to the government a draft law on minesterial
responsability and another of the law against corruption. The Romanian
Ministry of Justice ordered administrative investigation into the
disappearance of 250 files on international child adoption from the
archives of the Bucharest Municipal Court. RRI-RADOR, February 25,1997.
[05] Former Romanian sovereign addressed a message to the Romanians
In a message addressed to Romanians, former sovereign Mihai I has stated
his loiality to the oath taken upon his coronation as king, stressing that
he belongs to no particular group or party, but to the whole people. He has
indicated that under the oath taken he will have no constitutional or
material claims during his visit that he will pay to Romania, together with
queen Ana, on this Friday. The royal couple will come from Paris, and will
remain in Romania until March the 5th. RRI-RADOR, February 25,1997.
[06] No South-Korean diplomat has been kidnapped in Bucharest
The Embassy fo the Republic of Korea in Bucharest and the Romanian Foreign
Ministry denied the information according to which a South Korean diplomat
would have been kidnapped in Romania's capital city. The news had been
broadcasted by a South Korean TV station. The spokesman of the Korean
Embassy in Bucharest, Kim Man Siok, said that none of the seven diplomats
in Romania was missing, and that the disappereance of any other South
Korean citizen had not been reported. RRI-RADOR, February 25, 1997
[07] The protest movement of the convicts in Romania has come to an end
The protest movement of convicts in several prisons of Romania has come to
an end - the Penitenciares Division of the Interior Ministry announced on
Monday. The prisoners protested against the bad detention conditions, and
requested to have the possibility to be released on parole. The Romanian
authorities have promissed that the relations between wardens and convicts
will be improved and that new penitenciaries will be made available in
order to avoid overcrowding. RRI-RADOR, February 25, 1997.
[08] Maestro Ion Voicu died in Bucharest
Maestro Ion Voicu, one of the greatest Romanian violonists died in
Bucharest. He was born on October 8th, 1923, and was the favorite student
of composer George Enescu. His outstanding musical career enabled him to
set up the Ion Voicu International Foundation in September 1995. Among the
founding members of this trust are Zubim Mehta, Yehudi Menuhin and Romanian
cultural personalities such as Andrei Plesu, Arta Florescu, Andrei Serban
amnd Eugenia Moldoveanu. RRI-RADOR, February 25, 1997.
