[01] Romania will receive one billion dollars from the IMF and World Bank
Romania will receive this year credits amounting to one billion dollars
from the IMF and the World Bank, announced government spokeman Eugen
Serbaneascu. In spite of the fact that the negotiations between the
government representatives and those of the international institutions are
not finished yet and that the sides have not come to agree on the limits of
the budget deficit, the Romanian government's spokeman expressed hopes that
negotiations would come to an end within a week's time. He added that the
IMF agreeed with the Romanian government on supplimentary social protection
measures on condition that they should be integrated into a stability

[02] Romania's president, Emil Constantinescu, met the representatives of
the Bank Association of Romania
Romania's president, Emil Constantinescu, met in Bucharest the
representatives of the Bank Association of Romania. The talks focused on
the economic reform and on the contributions of the banks to this reform.
The aspects concerning bank legislation, including money laundering, were
also discussed. After the meeting, the governor of Romania's National Bank
said that the inflation envisaged for the second half of 1997 would be 30

[03] Foreign businessmen are interested in investing in Romania
The Romanian prime-minister, Victor Ciorbea, has received a large
delegation of foreign businessmen representing 28 private banks and
companies from the USA and Western Europe, whose social capital amounts
about 500 billion dollars. Welcoming their presence in Bucharest the
Romanian prime-minister envinced that this is a very good sign relevant for
the support western business and financial media is granting to the reform
process in Romania. The guests have said that through the visit they make
they want to explore posibilities of directly investing in Romanian
companies, including on the currency market, the availabilities they have
in view for Central and Eastern Europe amonting to billions of dollars.

[04] Romanian government has forwarded proposals to the Trade Unions on the
amount of the minimum wages per economy
Romanian government has forwarded proposals to the Trade Unions on the
amount of the minimum wages per economy and the basic methods on which
indexation percentages for wages are established. Romania's government
proposals suggested the increase of the minimum wage in two stages so that
in the first quarter of this year to be 130 thousand lei, about 20 dollars.
Through the financial and economic measures envisioned by the government
prices are assessed to go up by 97 per cent in December 1997, compared to
the ones in December 1996. The Trade Union Centrals are to present their
own point of view, after which the dialogue with the executive will be

[05] NATO's secretary general met the president of the Republic of Moldova
On a fact finding trip to Chisinau, NATO's secretary general, Javier Solana,
has met the president of the Republic of Moldova, Petru Lucinski and other
officials. Mr. Solana reiterated the Alliance's respect for Moldova's
constitutional neutrality. He welcolmed Chisinau's active position in the
pan-European security process and appreciated Moldova's participation in
the Partnership for Peace. Refering to NATO's enlargement, president
Lucinski said that each state has the right to choose the ways of ensuring

Weather will be mostly warm and sunny in most parts of the country. The
temperatures will range between -8 and +14 degrees Celsius. In Bucharest,
the weather will be fine, but windy. Maximum temperature expected will be 8
