  • [01] The signing of the basic Treaty between Romania and Ukraine may have an impact upon NATO

    The signing of the basic Treaty between Romania and Ukraine may have an impact upon NATO's decision to expand eastwards, said the Romanian foreign minister Adrian Severin. He made this statement during the special meeting in Istanbul which brought together the foreign ministers of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization countries. The foreign ministers of the eleven countries in the Black Sea area were analysing ways to set up a free trade zone in this region. RRI, February, 10, 1997

    [02] The Romanian goverment resumed talks on social wealfare and wage policy measures with the employers' association and the trade unions

    On Friday, the Romanian goverment and the employers' association, on one hand, and the trade unions, on the other, resumed talks on social wealfare and wage policy measures. The pay-rises are designed to cover 75 per cent of the price rises forecast so far. The president of the ALFA trade union cartel said that the goverment had made no actual proposals. In his turn, the president of the National Trade Union Block, Dumitru Costin, called on the goverment to present the situation of the national economy, the economic programme of the goverment and the social protection measures to be further taken.     [03] Romania is interested in signing the basic political treaty with Ukraine

    The Romanian ambassador to Ukraine, Ion Bistreanu, has expressed hopes that the next round of Romanian-Ukrainian negotiations to be held in Kiev, on February 25th, would be the last before the signing of the basic political treaty between the two countries - informed Radio Ukraine. In an interview with INTERFAX - Ukraine news agency, the Romanian ambassador said that Romania is interested in signing this document as soon as possible. Ukraine's stability, independence and territorial integrity represent, from our point of view, a primordial factor of stability and regional security, stressed the Romanian diplomat.     [04] NATO's secretary general visits the Republic of Moldova

    NATO's secretary general, Javier Solana, will visit Chisinau on Monday and Tuesday. In an interview with the gouvernament daily SOVEREIGN MOLDOVA on Saturday, Mr Solana said that the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova is not incompatible with its cooperation with NATO. According to the Constitution, the Republic of Moldova is a neutral country, but in 1994 it signed the Partnership for Peace proposed by NATO to all states in Eastern Europe and in the former Soviet Union.     [05] Turkey supports Romania's efforts to join NATO

    On Saturday, Romanian foreign minister Adrian Severin returned from Istanbul, where he represented Romania at the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Forum. On arrival he said that the meeting was focused on specific issues: the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Secretariat of the Forum and the adoption of a declaration of intent on the creation of a free trade area around the Black Sea. Adrian Severin reiterated that participation in the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Forum is not an alternative to the integration into the European Union, but part of the new European architecture. As part of his bilateral meetings in Istanbul, the Romanian foreign minister had talks with his Turksih counterpart, Mrs Tansu Ciller. The two parties promissed to support each other as regards Romania's wish to be admitted into NATO and the two countries' aspirations to get integrated into the European Union.
