[01] The Agenda of President Constantinescu's Visit to Brussels
On Monday night President Emil Constantinescu had a meeting in Bruxelles
with the President of the European Commission Jacques Santer. After the
meeting, the Romanian president said that Romania and the European
Commission can assume a joint responsibility for the creation of a stable
and prosperous zone in Central and Eastern Europe. Jacques Santer expressed
his sympathy for Romania and encouraged the government in Bucharest to
continue its ambitious reforms. The agenda of President Constantinescu's
visit to Brussels also includes meetings with the President of the European
Parliament, Jose Maria Lopez, with the Belgian prime-minister Jean Luc
Dehaene, an interview with the Euro News TV Channel and a gala dinner. RRI,

[02] The International Financial Institutions Support the Romanian
Goverment in its Social Protection Plans
"The government of Romania enjoys the support of the international
financial bodies with which it is negociating social protection measures"
said the Romanian Prime-Minister Victor Ciorbea, after the meeting with the
main trade union representatives. The trade union representatives said that
the employees were no longer willing to wait and in the case in which the
Executive would not secure the proper documents for the negotiations, the
social movements could be no longer stopped. On the other hand, the first
vice president of the National Peasants Christian Democratic Party, Gabriel
Tepelea, said on Monday that in the winter period the price for the
electric power would not rise. He also added that the international
financial bodies have agreed on concrete measures of social protection

[03] Romanian MPs on a Visit to US
The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament Ion
Diaconescu together with two deputies from the Christian and Democratic
National Peasants Party, a party in the government coalition, are visiting
USA during February 3rd and 10th, at the invitation of the US Congress and
State Department. On Wednesday, in Washington, the Romanian delegation will
participate to a diplomatic lunch given by Vicepresident Al Gore and on
Thursday they will take part to a prayer breakfast at which President Bill
Clinton is also expected. The Romanian MPs will also have meetings with
senior US congressmen, with businessmen in New York and Chicago and members

[04] Romania Has a Chance to Be Among the First Group of Nations Invited to
Join NATO
The US Executive advises the North Atlantic Alliance to admit Hungary in
the first stage of its enlargement, US Congressman Tom Lantos said in
Budapest. Lantos added that the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania and
Slovenia also had chances to enter into NATO in the first vawe, the final
decission being made upon the individual level of readiness of each
applicant. Speaking about his visit in Romania, the American congressman of
Hungarian origin stressed that Hungary and Romania could not accede to NATO
membership if they did not place treir relations on the basis of the
billateral treaty which he described as extremely important for the
stability and security of the region and of the whole of Europe. RRI,
