[01] Extraordinary meeting of the Supreme Defence Council
An extraordinary meeting of the Supreme Defence Council took place in
Bucharest, with Romania's president Emil Constantiescu attending. The
meeting debated the results presented by the specialized institutions
concerning the scope of phenomea such as corruption and the organized crime
in Romania. The data that we have illustrate the seriousness of these
phenomena, which have an impact even on national security, president Emil

[02] Romanian presidency communique
A press communique released Tuesday by Romania's presidency expresses the
belief that full application of the recommendations include in the
conclusions of the report drawn up by Felipe Gonzales offers the
possibility to settle the crisis in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, in
keeping with the OSCE practice. The acceptance by the Serbian authorities
of the results of the elections held on November 17th 1996 is belived to
defuse the domestic situation and will make possile a constructive dialogue
between the sides, favouring the developement of democracy.RRI-RADOR,

[03] Social protection measures
Alexandru Atanasiu, minister of labour and social protection in Romania
said that the social protection measures will be applied in January
concurrently with the rise in prices. The unemployed, the pensioners and
those already on social security will be first to benefit from these
measures. The least inflationary method will be applied to help people with
low incomes. For February, the Labour and Social Protection Ministry has in
view a programme for cutting down the taxes including on salaries. In
adition to social protection measures, the legisation on commerce has to be
correctly applied, to avoid the sale of goods at racked up prices. The
final programme will be made public at the end of this week an will pursue
to curb inflation, the Romanian labour and social protection minister

[04] Trade with Romanian textiles
The United States and Canada have opened their markets for Romaian textiles
the Romanian industry and Trade Minister announced on Tuesday. Textiles
will thus be exported without license in the quotas alloted to Romania by
the US and Canadian trade ministries. The Technological Cooperation Society
of Germany also wants to implement in Romania a programme for reviving the
Romanian ready made clothes industry, the Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and
Industry announced on Tuesday. German specialists in design will give
lectures in Bucharest and in several localities of Transylvania.RRI-RADOR,
