Lefkada is a mountainous island surrounded by the deep blue Ionian sea but
so close to mainland Greece, that you can visit it by crossing a sort bridge
by a car or bus. The scenery changes quickly as you move from the east to
west side of the island. The east side has dense vegetation and smooth shores.
The west side is steep but filled with endless sandy beaches. The capital
of the island, Lefkada, is a beautiful town build near the harbour and the famous castle of Agia Mavra founded in 1300 by J. Orsini a Frankish knight. Other interesting places
in the island are Nidri, the most popular spot in Lefkada, which according to the archaelogist
Dorpfeld was Homer's Ithaca, Poros with the pebbled beach of Mikro Yialo, Vassiliki, Agios Nikolaos a traditional fishing village, Agios Nikitas and Karia. Also of remarkable beauty are the mountan villages of Athani, Episkopu, Kalamitsi. By using a ferry you can explore the small island of Meganissi and have
a view of the famous island of Skorpios, belonging to the tycoon Onasis,with
the crystal green waters. Lefkada will impress anyone with its wild beauty,
picturesque villages, sandy beaches and gorgeous scenary.
