Police seized the explosives which were sent to Turkey through Hezbollah's cooperation. Gunay Arslan, a DHKP-C militant drove through Turkey's Cilvegozu border gate on the Syrian border. National Intelligence Organization (MIT) started following the Mercedes which had a Syrian licence plate. 300 TNT explosives, 30 hand granades, one gun and many bullets were found in the car. DHKP-C militants were planning to hold violent acts to protest the F type prisons and to prevent Fehriye Erdal's return to Turkey. MASTER PROGRAMME ON HUMAN RIGHTS FOR POLICE AND GENDARME MILLIYET (LIBERAL)U.S. AMBASSADOR IN ANKARA PARRIS SAYS MHP CHANGED A LOTU.S. Ambassador in Ankara Marc Parris said today's Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) is different than it was ten years ago. He said political poles in Turkey have adopted a more central understanding in time and the MHP played a responsible role in this process. GARBAGE STRIKE SUSPENDED FOR TWO MONTHS SABAH (LIBERAL)FAREWELL WITH WARNINGGendarme General Commander Full General Rasim Betir, during his farewell speech, focused on the threat of Islamist fundamentalism. At a ceremony which was also attended by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Betir said the fundamentalism climbed in the last twenty years and it has become the biggest threat in Turkey. Full General Aytaac Yalman who took over the post from Betir promised to fight against Islamist fundamentalism. ALAN MAKOVSKY FROM U.S. THINK-TANK INSTITUTION SAYS CUMHURIYET (LEFT)WE EXPERIENCED 500 QUAKES IN FOUR MONTHSA total of 491 quakes took place throughout Turkey in the last four months. The epicenters of the quakes were changing between 2.6 and 5.9 on the Richter scale. Three of these quakes were strong, 10 of them were moderate, 43 of them slight, and the others were very slight. Denizli and Cankiri had more quakes in number. A total of 15 quakes occurred in Turkey on August 20, 2000, and 10 of them were in Denizli. All the quakes in Denizli province were slight. DEMIREL TO SET UP EUROPEAN UNION FOUNDATION RADIKAL (LEFT)TURKEY DOES NOT KNOW THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN THAT ARE ON THE STREETSAccording to official data, more than 7,000 children were on the streets only in Istanbul. The state does not have mechanisms to protect the children against their families or the streets. Some of the children, whose families force them to work, can be considered within this respect. Children and Youth Centers, which were established for those who live on the streets, could nly reach to 3,414 children througout Turkey. RECENT REPORT OF NSC: ''THE STATE BESIEGED'' RAND: ''TURKEY IS NEW GEO-STRATEGIC POWER'' The report noted that ''during the Cold War, Turkey played a critical role in the containment of Soviet power. There was agreement between the United States and Western Germany, in particular, on the central importance of Turkey in Western strategy. A similar recognition of the Turkish role generated support. During the 1990s, however, this consensus disappeared. Security debates in the United States and Europe acknowledge Turkey's geopolitical significance and the need to reinvigorate relations. German PLE company did the feasibility works of the project. BAHCELI: ''NO PROBLEM WITH THE PRESIDENT'' ZAMAN (CONSERVATIVE)GOVERNMENT PUTS OFF THE STRIKECouncil of Ministers decided to put off the strike of the garbage collectors in Istanbul and Izmir municipalities for two months. The decision was taken as it was summer and this garbage problem will lead to social problems because of health reasons, and that Izmir Fair would be opened soon. Administrators of unions criticized the decision for postponement sand said, ''there has been injustice to the workers.'' FROM JOURNEY OF ''HOPE'' TO TOMATO FIELDS A total of 140 persons have been settled in a social settlement place called Casa Regina near Otranto city. Twenty Turkish citizens who are among them said they came to Italy by taking all the risks and they have to fulfil some conditions before getting the permission to settle in Italy. [02] TURKEY'S NEW UN PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE PAMIR STARTS HIS NEW POST IN NEW YORKNEW YORK, Aug 25 (A.A) - Turkey's new UN permanent representative Ambassador Umit Pamir came to New York from Ankara and started his new post on Thursday.Pamir has taken over the post from Ambassador Volkan Vural who was appointed as the secretary general in charge of Turkey's relations with the EU at the Foreign Ministry. Ambassador Pamir will present his letter of credentials to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Friday. [03] INVESTMENTS OF THE EU AND TURKISH INSURANCE COMPANIESANKARA, Aug 25 (A.A) - As the investments of the insurance companies in the European Union (EU) increased by 121.2 percent in 1992-1998 period, increase in the investments of insurance companies in Turkey reached to 258.6 percent.According to the data of Turkey Insurance companies, investments of insurance companies in Turkey increased from 430 million Euro to 1.542 billion Euro in 1992-1998 period. In this period, investments of insurance companies of the 15 EU member countries increased from 1.671 trillion Euro to 3.696 Euro. The figures in question state 121.2 percent increase. FOREST FIRES Forest Ministry Fire Operation Center report said forest fires which broke out in Fethiye, Tekirdag-Saray, Tekirdag-Sarkoy, Istanbul-Alemdag, Inegol, Amasya-Vezirkopru, Corum, Canakkale, Sinop and Balikesir-Dursunbey were taken under control. The statement said cool and rainy weather began to be influential in northern regions, yet noted that still there was risk of fire in Adana and Kahramanmaras provinces in southern region and in Izmir and Mugla provinces in Aegean region. [04] FRENCH PRIESTS ADMIRE OTTOMAN ARTIFACTSSAMSUN, Aug 25 (A.A) - Priests of French Catholic Church, who came to northern Samsun province to meet with Catholic society in the Black Sea Region, admired the Ottoman artifacts exhibited in Samsun Archeology and Ethnography Museum.French priests and their wives, who also visited Italian Catholic Church, received information from officials of Samsun Archeology and Ethnography Museum about the artifacts. Priest Remi Fitterer told A.A correspondent that they were fascinated by the Ottoman artifacts. Fitterer said that they came to Black Sea Region to visit churches in Samsun and Trabzon and to meet with Christian society. They were astonished by the cultural variety in Turkey, Fitterer noted. Fitterer added that they saw that Turkey is rich of history and that they will also visit other parts of Turkey in every opportunity. [05] EUROPEAN JUNIOR WEIGHT-LIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS -OZ OF TURKEY WINS ONE SILVER AND TWO BRONZE MEDALSKOSICE, Aug 25 (A.A) - Omer Oz of Turkey, competing in 54 kilogram category in European Junior Weight-lifting Championships, won on Friday one silver and two bronze medals.Oz became silver medalist in snatch event while he became bronze medalist in clean and jerk and total. The championships will end on August 27. [07] MANY GRAVES AND SHRINES FOUND IN ARTVINARTVIN, Aug 25 (A.A) - Many graves, grave stones, and shrines belonging to Ottoman era were found during archeological searches in northeastern Artvin province.Archeological searches carried out by Van Yuzuncu Yil University's Arts and History Department and Culture Ministry since 1992, were finalized on August 20. Six experts headed by Associate Professor Osman Aytekin carried out searches in Yusufeli and Savsat townships between August 7 and 20. A total of 13 historical graves and a construction which was registered as a tomb but in fact was a chapel were found in Kilickaya hamlet, Alanbasi, Altparmak, Kopluce, Demirkent and Ishan villages of Yusufeli. Experts also found 34 historical graves, two shrines and four grave stones in Sogutlu district, Ciritduzu, Cevizli, Koprulu and Pinarli villages of Savsat. [08] IZMIR STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTA DUE TO FAR EASTIZMIR, Aug 25 (A.A) - The Izmir State Symphony Orchestra (IZDSO) will go on a tour to Far East between September 9 and October 10.Kenan Gokkaya, the Director of IZDSO, told a press conference on Friday that IZDSO will go on a tour to Far Eastern countries, including Malaysia and Japan, between September 9 and October 10. Gokkaya said that this tour will be organized upon the invitation of Japan and that it will be financed by Japanese Concert Organization Committee. There will not be any soloists in their tour, Gokkaya noted, adding Japanese Yoshinao Osawa will conduct the orchestra in all concerts. Gokkaya stated that the orchestra will give 14 concerts in 11 cities of Japan and that they will give two concerts in Malaysia. Before it leaves for the Far East, the orchestra will give a concert in Kulturpark Tennis Club to contribute to Turkish-Greek friendship on August 31, Gokkaya stressed. Gokkaya added that Greek bousouki player Manulas Pupis will be the soloist in the concert and Japanese Osawa will conduct the orchestra. [09] KURSK SUBMARINE DISASTER -GENERAL TURKERI, CHAIRMAN OF GENERAL STAFF'S INTELLIGENCE UNIT, SIGNS CONDOLENCE BOOK AT RUSSIAN EMBASSY IN ANKARAANKARA, Aug 25 (A.A) - General Fevzi Turkeri, the Chairman of General Staff's Intelligence Unit, signed on Friday condolence book opened at the Russian Embassy in Ankara out of respect to 118 sailors who were killed in Kursk submarine disaster.He expressed the Turkish Armed Forces' profound sorrow over demise of Russian sailors. The Kursk Submarine sank on August 12 after it was shattered by an explosion while taking part in naval exercises in the Barents Sea off Russia's northern coast. All 118 sailors aboard were killed in the disaster. Barak is expected to meet with President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and some other officials. Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian President, had earlier visited Ankara within framework his visits which target at finding support to his stance in Middle East peace talks. [12] ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES MINISTER ERSUMER: -''AZERBAIJANI NATURAL GAS WILL COME TO TURKEY TOGETHER WITH TURKMEN NATURAL GAS''ANKARA, Aug 25 (A.A) - Cumhur Ersumer, the Energy and Natural Resources Minister, said on Friday, ''Azerbaijani natural gas will come to Turkey together with Turkmen natural gas.''Ersumer received John Wolf, the Energy Adviser of U.S. President Bill Clinton for Caspian Basin. Addressing journalists following the meeting, Ersumer said that talks focused on Turkmenistan-Turkey natural gas project and Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan project. Ersumer stressed that an important progress had been recorded in works carried out by Azerbaijani state-run petroleum company SOCAR on the issue of financing the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan project. Noting that the U.S. Secretary of Energy would pay a visit to Kazakhstan in coming days, Ersumer told reporters that initiatives to include Kazakh oil in the project were underway. Recalling that contract of the consortium carrying out works to bring Turkmen natural gas to Turkey, ended at the end of March, Ersumer said, ''the Shell Company has submitted a new contract. We expect the contract to be approved in coming days.'' Meanwhile, John Wolf said in his part they planned to hold a meeting with potential investors soon as the main engineering works started for the Baku- Ceyhan project. Wolf stressed that they expected Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey to come together within framework of the Turkmenistan-Turkey natural gas project. Responding to a question, Ersumer said, ''agreement was signed on the issue
of Iranian natural gas. Iranian natural gas will come to Turkey in July,
2001.'' [13] EUROPEAN JUNIOR WEIGHT-LIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS -SAGIR OF TURKEY WINS THREE SILVER AND AVCI WINS THREE BRONZEKOSICE, Aug 25 (A.A) - Taner Sagir of Turkey, competing in 59-kg category in European Junior Weight-lifting Championships, won on Friday three silver medals.Abdurrezzak Avci, competing in same category, won three bronze medals on the secod day of the championships. Sagir became silver medalist in snatch, clean and jerk and total while Avci became the bronze medalist in snatch, clean and jerk and total. The championships will end on August 27. [14] FOREST FIRES IN LATAGAN AND MARMARIS TOWNSHIPS OF MUGLAMUGLA, Aug 25 (A.A) - Fires broke out in forested areas near Dogankoy village in Yatagan township and near Aksaz village in Marmaris township in Aegean Mugla province on Friday.Fire-fighting teams backed by helicopters rushed to the area to extinguish the fires.
