[01] TOURISM IN GREECE IS SATISFACTORY

Tourism in Greece is at satisfactory levels this summer, according to Minister of Tourism Dimitris Avramopoulos after the meeting he had with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

We are doing well, said Mr. Avramopoulos, adding that those who were predicting last year that tourism in Greece will be slow were proven wrong.

The Minister of Tourism reiterated that tourism in Greece needs reforms in order to grow while he announced that preparations for the next tourist season have already begun.

[02] PETROL PRICES CLOSE TO A BARREL

Petrol prices are close to a barrel causing concern about the effects this development will have on global economy.

Yesterday in New York, the price of a petrol barrel closed at .90, while two years ago in August 2003 it was at a barrel.

The recent price hikes are the result of a combination of concerns that have to do with the sufficiency of reserves due to the increased demand and the security conditions in oil producing countries, according to a statement made to the BBC Greek Service by Aberdeen University petroleum economics professor Alec Kemp.

Minister of Development Dimitris Sioufas issued an appeal to consumers to contribute to the efforts to keep oil prices down.

[03] GREEK AID TO THE FLOOD VICTIMS IN BULGARIA

The Foreign Ministry International Development Cooperation Agency (Hellenic Aid) approved the sum of 50,000 euros for the flood victims in the regions of Sofia, Pazarjik, Plovdiv, Smolian, Vratsa and Montana in Bulgaria after a decision by Deputy Foreign Minister Evripidis Stilianidis, responsible for issues of International Development Cooperation and Assistance.

The aid will be used to purchase water pumps, blankets, clothing and footwear, foodstuff and drinking water.

[04] CANNING PLANT OWNERS ACCEPTED THE PRICE DEMAND OF PEACH GROWERS

The canning plant owners accepted the peach producers' demand and will pay 20 cents for a kilo.

Peach producers in Greece initially had asked for 23 cents a kilo compared to 19 cents offered by the canning plants.

Now, peach producers are waiting for a meeting with the responsible Deputy Minister of Agriculture to take place next Wednesday hoping that the wholesale price for peaches will reach 22 cents a kilo.

[05] KARAMANLIS-PAPADOPOULOS MEETING ON AUGUST 18

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis will meet with Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos in Athens on August 18.

The meeting will be held in the presence of Greek Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis and his Cypriot counterpart Giorgos Iakovou as well as, government personnel from both sides.

[06] PEACH PRODUCERS LIFTED THE ROAD BLOCKADES

The peach producers from the prefecture of Pella, north Greece, ended the road blockades and the three motorway junctions of Melisiou, Mavrovouniou and Skidra are open to traffic since this afternoon in a show of good will in view of the outcome of the meeting held by owners of peach canning plants.

Peach producers expect them to offer better wholesale prices or cover the haulage.

Skidra-Edessa Association of Agricultural Co-operatives chairman Savvas Moisiadis stated that peach producers are currently holding a meeting on the issue.

[07] WATER LEVEL IN THE EVROS RIVER IS DROPPING

The water level in the Evros River, northeastern Greece, is gradually dropping. Waters at the Pithion Water Level Count Station were at 5.26 m while last night were at 5.40 m with the flood watch level being at 4.70 m and the flood alert level at 5.70 m.

The embankment at the region of Pithion at the site of Praggi broke today and as a result hundreds of acres of arable land were covered by water.

Meanwhile, the Orestiada-Dikeon railway line is still out of service because of the floods and people use Greek Railway Organization, OSE, buses.
