  • [01] JUDGMENT UPON RETURN

    Athens, 10 August 2005 (12:55 UTC+2)

The few shipping companies that created problems to the passengers will be judged when the passenger ships return to port, stated Minister of Merchant Marine Manolis Kefalogiannis who briefed Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on the problems in coastal shipping and the delays in the passenger boat service as well as, on the discomfort caused to the passengers and the recent loan received by the Ministry for the further development of the sea ports.

Mr. Kefalogiannis called on the shipping companies to offer a tangible apology to the passengers after the meeting he had with Coalition President Alekos Alavanos. Mr. Alavanos stated that the Aegean should stop being in a state of hemiplegia.

[02] CONCERNS ABOUT SUFFICIENCY AND SECURITY

    London, 10 August 2005 (13:31 UTC+2)

The petrol price hike race continues as the petrol price in the Asian markets broke the $ 64 a barrel mark.

The new record high prices have more than doubled compared to the same period two years ago, in August 2003, when petrol price was at $ 28 a barrel.

The recent price hikes are the result of a combination of concerns regarding the sufficiency of petrol reserves due to the increased demand and the security conditions in oil producing countries, according to statements made to the BBC Greek service by Aberdeen University petroleum economics professor Alec Kemp.

[03] SURPRISE ROAD BLOCKADES BY PEACH PRODUCERS

    Thessaloniki, 10 August 2005 (13:07 UTC+2)

Peach producers in the prefecture of Pella, north Greece, proceeded with new surprise mobilizations and blockaded the Thessaloniki-Edessa national motorway. Last night, they had suspended the blockades in view of the meeting with Deputy Minister of Agriculture Alexandros Kontos set to take place in Athens at 7 pm.

A little after 10 this morning they blocked traffic in the junctions of Mavrovounio, Melissio and Mandalo as well as, at the junction of the Thessaloniki-Edessa old national motorway with the Skydra ring road.

Traffic Police direct drivers to secondary roads.

[04] WATER LEVEL CONTINUES TO RISE IN EVROS

    Alexandroupolis, 10 August 2005 (13:52 UTC+2)

The Evros River water level continues to rise reaching 5.27 m at the Pithion Water Level Count Station, and is over the flood watch level of 4.70 m, while the flood alert level is at 5.70 m. However, according to the responsible agencies in the prefecture of Evros, northeastern Greece, there are indications that waters recede in the region of Dikaion.

The prefecture of Evros is in constant contact with the Bulgarian and Turkish prefectures along the Evros River banks.
